I have researched many threads here and on vehicle-specific forums but thought I'd ask here first.....

I am looking for the best synthetic fluids for the differentials and transfer case. I'm at 70,000 miles. I really like Motul but has anyone had good experiences with any high-end fluids in their V8 (or V6) 4th generation 4Runners specificially? Any thoughts on Motul, Motorex, or Redline?

I can always go Amsoil Severe Gear, but I personally prefer the Motul, Repsol, and Motorex engine oils so was looking for someone who had tried some others and had good results. They make my motorcycles shift smoother too, though I am aware that could just be in my head

Lastly, I keep being told that the Forester (2006, 4 speed auto) HAS to use Subaru ATF fluid? Any thoughts on this? I donlt know why, but I don't want to blow something up either....or ruin something in some other way. I do not think the Subaru stuff is synthetic- something I prefer for longer intervals.

Thanks BITOGers!

I use German Catrol as engine oil on both vehicles.

I have Amsoil 75W110 on my x-case and diffy on my Highlander and it is keeping the drivetrain noise extremely low. I am very happy with Amsoil and u should consider it equally wrt other fluids.

I've got over 220K on my 4Runner and have used Mobil 1 Gear lube (75W90) in the front and rear axles. No leaks or issues with the axles at that age/mileage...and I know that the Dealer uses conventional for my truck (another reason to DIY). You're considering using a far better gear oil than the truck requires...you'll be fine with any of them...

This is good to hear. Amsoil and M1 are a bit cheaper than the others, though money is not a factor since these fluids last quite a while and it's only the best for my babies. The 4r is my "weekend" vehicle for when I go dirt-biking.

The Subaru is my daily driver. Any recommendations on that as well? I would like to switch to a good synthetic trans fluid if possible.

The Product Data Sheets for Amsoil Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF and Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc claim suitability for Subaru ATF-HP applications. I have not yet tried either of those in my '07 Outback. It's time for a drain and fill so I need to decide whether to use one of those or go with the genuine Subaru ATF-HP again.
