So you had insurance for it?
OK it was their shipping box. As long as you have the shipping number you should be OK (I think)

I don't know if it was insured or not. The shipping label was a pre-paid one supplied by Verizon...we do have a tracking number, but in the past, I have had USPS try to claim they never received the package to begin with...I saw my daughter put it in their mail box, so they are responsible if they lost it...I'm not paying $700 for their mistake...

In a case like that, where you have something expensive and/or important, take the time to go inside the post office and hand it to a clerk. When you do that you get a drop off receipt proving you actually dropped it off. Sorry Grampi but if you dropped it outside and they have no record of it you are SOL. Even the insurance will require proof of drop off to cover it.

I've had so many problems with USPS, UPS and FedEx.

At this point, I expect my package will get lost. If it actually shows up, I find myself happy.

It wasn't handed to a clerk, but the drop off box was inside the post office...how do you prove it was put in their box? They lost it, they're responsible for it, and if they try to get out of it, I will take legal action...

USPS being a Gov. agency must be sued at the Federal level. You probably need to work as much as possible with the Postmaster.

Item of value should be handed to postal worker who would scan it. If there is no track of initial intake not sure this is going to end well.

I dropped of my old iPhone 6 for trade in to Verizon with provided label and package at post office to worker. It had two tracks of intake and then delivery.

I can't prove it was put in their mailbox (I don't know how anyone could), and they can't prove it wasn't. How does that automatically default to me being screwed. Does that mean the postal service isn't responsible for ANY of the packages that are put in their mail boxes if they are lost before they are initially scanned? Wow!

Coulda, shoulda, woulda...it wasn't, but I don't see how that releases the USPS of any responsibility...the package was put in THEIR mail box...

As pointed out without proof or insurance how can they be responsible? If documentation were not required, scumbags would be claiming every day that they sent 10K worth of gold and now its gone.We have had some items gone missing, bu it wasn't worth insuring. Theft from postal workers is not statistically insigficant. We all learn. I learned the cheap way. Your's may be a bit more expensive.

Again I ask, how does one prove they put a package in a mail box?

You say you did but can't prove it..end of story. You should have delivered it to a clerk and got a receipt.
You keep harping on this and are clearly screwed.

Not saying I wouldn't have done the same thing. But I would understand that I f'd up and will learn from it.

I had to return an item last Friday. Shipped it USPS because it is the least expensive option.

The lady gave me a receipt that gave the tracking number.

Got the email confirming the refund on Wednesday.

Their shipping routes can be a bit odd from my self-centered "want my package now" point of view, but to a logistics expert it could very well make complete economical sense. I will say their actual tracking database is a bit sub par though. Recently, I've had great luck with them, but I will admit lately there has been a $.10 difference on Rock Auto from using USPS 4-6 day shipping vs. FedEx's 2-3 day shipping. Ordering early week (most of the time) guarantees my part by the weekend which is awesome. You also save a decent amount by shipping to a commercial address which I also recently learned on BITOG.

Sometimes it's even USPS carrying the FedEx package.. Service wise, I can't tell a difference.

Doesn't matter, I had an entire month's worth of bills put in the mailbox at the local PO-THEY LOST THEM ALL! Made a few phone calls, started paying them all online. And they wonder why they have lost so much business!

I can tell a HUGE difference with "Smartpost". I got that for my free shipping for an ebay item (didn't know at the time) and it's been more than a week. Supposed to be on the mail truck and delivered yesterday; they are calling it a "delivery exception".

It almost seems like USPS wants fedex to look bad so they dawdle. Sure this varies from location to location.

And they can't prove I didn't...since I have a tracking number, and I'm making a huge stink about it (which why would someone do that that if they didn't actually put a package in their mail box), I would say the onus is on them to prove I didn't put it in their box...

I am confused..how did you get a USPS tracking # when you just dropped the package in a mailbox. Or is the tracking # the one that was used getting the package to you?>

It was a pre-paid shipping label provided by Verizon...
