Personal time at my job can be used for any purpose, but was instigated for sick leave, or taking care of sick kids, for a major loss of work time because of surgery or an accident, or to attend a funeral of someone. I guess it depends on how you feel about your job and about others performing your duties when you are not there, possibly putting others in a bind. I try not to abuse mine personally, using single vacation days first, then personal days. But if I were to have an accident, requiring me to be off of work for a time, my vacation would be used first, and then personal time. Sort of an insurance against a loss of time.

At my job, we usually get two personal days per year. Basically, you use them for days where you're not SICK per se, but really NEED the day off for some reason...say you come across some free tickets to the Astros game or something.

If there's enough coverage, they'll let you burn a personal day for something like that.

I love personal days!

PTO or personal time off, I would say is becoming more popular with employers. Where I work, we get 5 sick days a year. Typically, when someone uses a sick day, the company does not know until the morning of the absence, leaving little room to prepare. Since we cannot carry sick days, guess what happens at the end of the year? Yep. Everyone becomes "sick". To make matters worse, the end of the year is our busy season.

Now if we had PTO, I think it's a win across the board. The frequency of missed work would be spread out versus a spike at year end. Employees wouldn’t feel compelled to falsify their health status because they have something to do or have a lot of sick time. And, I think most importantly, manager would have additional time to prepare for the change in workforce because they would know about the absence before the day of!

When I worked in the IT industry, PTO was a combination of vacation, sick leave, and "personal days". One could use PTO hours for any purpose, but you had to get permission from your supervisor for non-sickness use. My wife, who worked for the state, got two "personal days" a year that could be used for any purpose.

So, it all depends upon your employer what one can use their "personal days" or PTO for.

I have 21 days of accumulated personal time at work. I work at wal-mart distribution. It used to be personal time could be used anytime you wished. Wal-mart doesent like to have set guidelines and rules, that would make things too easy. Is it common practice that personal time can be used as you feel like at a typical job?
