using MC 15w-40 and Racor filters

Like the subject title says, I'm using MC 15w40 HD diesel oil and the Racor (makes Motorcraft) cartridge filters in my 2006 6.0L Ford F250.
I pick up 3 5qt jugs at Wally and order my Racor filters online.

I haven't sent off a sample for analysis, but I change the oil and filter every 5k miles and I sleep well at night.

Is something wrong with me? I don't see a lot of talk about Motorcraft diesel oil.
 
Motorcraft diesel oil HD is a pretty decent oil. When I first bought my truck the dealer service told me it was a hydrofinished oil. I was impressed he even knew what hydrofinished was, and I think vice versa, though that was before I knew about this site and I didn't know as much about it as I know now.
I had always been partial to Chevron Delo, from favorable experiences with it over Rotella, and the MC certainly seemed to do as well as it, and figured at the time it would most closely match the requirements of the 7.3 engine.
 
MC HDEO is a good oil, overall. You don't hear about it much because the big three (Delo, Delvac, Rotella) dominate the market, and the conversations. There are other good oils too, such as Premium Blue, Tection Extra and such, but they just don't garner the attention of the big-3.

One thing I like about the MC HDEO is that it's available in 10w30. That is a very good thing for those people who are brand loyal (Ford = MC) and still need lower vis for winter HEUI operation. My neighbor has an '05 PSD, and the 10w30 really helps quiet the "romp" of HEUI in winter. Although, for you in LA, I'd run 15w40 year round.

If you're doing 5k mile OCIs with MC-HDEO and OEM filters, you can continue to sleep soundly for a long, long time.

I thought the Motorcraft 15w40 jugs were 4 quarts, not 5 quarts.

Anyway, get the Motorcraft or Fram filter (made by Racor, same patent #'s on the bottom, same great construction). Maybe you can save a few bucks.

Post an oil analysis sometime for us.

I have an '06 6.0l PSD myself.
 
The MC diesel oil at my local walmart comes in 5 qt jugs. I save some cash by buying 3 of those in comparison to 4 one gallon jugs of Rotella.

I have nothing against Rotella, but I've read some stories about injector problems in the 6.0L PSD related to Rotella.
Who knows....

I had no idea the Fram cartridge filter was made by Racor. I'll have to compare prices to what I order Racor online for.

I would run Motorcraft over Rotella T, and Delo 400 over either.

Delo 400 does exceptionally well in these HEUI setups. Been there, tried that in a '02 7.3.
 
Oddly enough, I believe Rotella was factory fill in Powerstrokes for a while. I recall a post on this site where there was a Ford SuperDuty promotional tour for the (then new) PSD. There were some photos with clear Rotella oil information in more than one shot. IIRC, it was NOT a Rotella tour, it was a Ford Superduty tour. I also know that Ford has worked closely with Connoco/Phillips before as well. I have no idea who makes the MC HDEO now. Not that it confirms/denies anything, just food for thought.

As far as injector issues with the 6.0L, well, I don't know that you could blame the oil for anything that happens in one of those engines. There have been how many different authorized Ford flash tune upgrades over the last few years? I recall one not long ago where the injectors were cycled upon shutdown, and they would buzz to cycle the injector; you can hear it when you're outside the truck (my neighbor's does this). But, I think the most recent program tune is called the "inductive heat cycle" flash, to address oil stiction in the injectors?

I'm not convinced that the Fram filter is made by Racor. Fram is owned by Allied Signal, right? I don't think there is any affiliation there. The Motorcraft filter might be made by Racor, though.
 
I have heard the same. Rotella probably met all the specs at the lowest price...before Ford really got into marketing their own Motorcraft line of oils.

The price for the Fram's is about $15.00 or so.

When Pep-boys had their 2 for $7.00 Fram filter specials I stocked up on them. I still have about 15 of them!!

You can't do any better than $3.50 per filter, when they were selling for $18.00 each at the time.

The printing on the Fram filter as well as the bag with the o-ring for the cap, as well as the installation sheet for the o-ring is identical between the Racor, MC, and Fram. So as of 2-1-09 when I bought my last Fram CH9549, it was a Racor/MC exact match.
 
Hmm, I just may have to look into that. Thanks for the insight!

BTW, I'm taking my 6L to the shop Tuesday to find out why I'm still getting the whistle from my degas bottle cap when I'm pulling heavy load.

This was supposed to be taken care of when I got my oil cooler and EGR cooler replaced!
 
You will probably end up getting head gaskets as I did on my bone stock 07 after the same problem as you. Still love the truck though. And these guys are right about the Fram filters and even some Purolators are the same with the same media and patent numbers.

If the inside of the degas bottle is sludged up w/oil residue-there's a head gasket job in your future. How long do your air filter elements last (without getting sludged)?
 
Air filter elements?
I'm not sure, but I've only changed my stock air filter once. BUT I've only had the truck since November. I bought it used. I use Motorcraft OEM air filters. Its a large one piece 50 dollar filter.

They get sludged??
