Uses for Left Over Gear Oil?

Back when I was doing the CV axles on the wife's Lancer, it took a while for me to figure out that unlike every other seal in the world, if you drive the output seal home, it won't seal properly, leaking gear oil everywhere. You've got to leave it a few mm proud for it to seal. Becuase I was going thru gear oil like crazy, I bought a gallon of it at Wally World. This is the cheap 80W-90 Supertech stuff; nothing fancy.

Got about three quarts left. The Lancer is currently filled with RedLine something-or-other which I forget and the wife loves how it shifts. My last few gear oil choices for the Lancer made for difficult shifting, so I've got no use for it.

Anyone got any neat ideas for using up left-over gear oil?

Use it as oil-can oil? Isn't the pH weird for use in "general lubrication" type applications?

Use it as assembly lube when putting small engines back together?

I hate throwing stuff away...and don't know of anyone who will use it...and being non-synthetic, I won't use it in the Tundra or the Mustang...

Should have been a GL4 80/90 probably not GL5.I wouldn't use retail store gear lubes unless in a flat out emergency.
 
If you have 3 quarts left...go buy 1 quart of the same stuff at WM and fill the 4 qt jug up and return it.
 
Not an issue for your location but you could use it on a winter beater. Spray the underside down during the summer and when its nice and dry out bomb down some dirt roads. Should end up with a nice mucky layer of anti-rust goodness!

I use fluidfilm for this, but I would think gear oil would be functional.
 
My sliding back door was getting a lil sticky,so I used some old Castrol 80W90 on the track. Slides like melted butter now.

Absolutely correct! The Lancer called for GL4, the SuperTech is GL5. I needed something I could use cheaply to determine when I had fixed the seal issue. This is what I used the GL5 for - cheap oil to leak out. Once I had the seals working, I drained the GL5 and went to RedLine GL4 rated oil.

Motorcycle chain oil. Doesn't matter what you use for that since nothing works anyway.

IIRC the corrosion issue with GL5 relates to yellow metals/bronzes. Unless you're oiling a propeller, the only place you're likely to encounter them would, ironically,be in a manual transmission, so general lube duty should be OK, if you don't mind the smell.

In that scenario, I'd have thought a thickish engine oil (which IIRC is likely to meet GL4 specs) would have been adequate, and more..er..re-deployable, though I suppose your average BITOGer has rather specific requirements for engine oil.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll probably use it for "squirt-can" oil for stuff in the garage where a stink is acceptable.
