Used SUV for about $15-18K?

Once you start filling up at the pump, you may lose your affinity to SUV's. You should be able to get some new sport coupes or sedans for at or under $20K.

lol... you guys are harsh, but i have to agree... my father in law whines about how much gas his durango uses, and all he does is use it to drive to work and back 30 miles round trip....talk about waste.... theres no "feeling of sitting up high".... i get that feeling driving a freightliner, an suv is a complete toy when you drive one of those... im not an suv fan, most of the people ive seen cant control their vehicles...hit curbs, swing way out wide like they are driving a tractor/trailer, or backup 18 times to park in a spot at the mall

oh, and dont forget, the suv'ers are always the ones that SLAM on their brakes at a speedbump, or railroad track.... i thought thats what the extra 6" of clearance was for? and you're right, they won't drive in the dirst if their life depended on it....keep that baby with the offroad package spit shine clean... all about looking like you offroad with the best of em

Pete, wake up! You're dreaming again.

Thanks for the reality check guys. As far as gas, I figured a manual tranny V6 SUV will probably chew up 16 mpg in mostly city driving. At the same time, something like a 330ci gets about 18 mpg on premium fuel, so the difference is not huge. Alas, I am pretty sure it'd be more fun to drive than an SUV, at least on weekends when I'm not stuck in rush-hour traffic.

Any type of AWD / 4WD can certainly be more useful for more than off roading. Any type of RWD vehicle, truck based models expecially, seem to benefit from AWD/ 4WD from time to time. If you want or need the volume or payload then they make sense to at least consider. If you choose carefully you won't have much worse mileage than a lot of other vehicles. My 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup gets as good or better in town mileage as 50% of the vehicles on the EPA list, but it's a diesel.

Rear wheel drive fancy cars seemed to fare poorly in the recent light ice and snow storm here, where I saw Lincolns and BMWs stranded on the interstate. Good winter tires can make a big difference, but even better is good winter tires and FWD, AWD or 4WD.

Here's a hint:

Government auctions!!!

That's how I get vehicles when I am on a budget. Can't tell you anything about FL as I live in MA...

We just got a very-clean CR-V for about 1/2 of that amount.

Element starts at $15k, if you don't care about AWD but you can add that feature. New car warranty is nice and Honda extended warranty makes it insanely cheap to own long-term. With the way the CR-V sucks gas, I can't imagine buying anything bigger, like a real SUV.

Can you get a nice slightly used (2003-2004) SUV for about that much? What would you recommend? It doesn't have to be 4x4 and it should have a manual tranny.

As much as I'm ashamed to admit it, I've been attracted to SUVs as of late. Maybe it's this whole "sitting up high" feeling, or the fact that I've never owned one, I dunno...

On the other hand, I'm worried that it's just a passing phase of mine and that I'll get bored of it soon and that I should rather look for a sporty coupe/sedan like I was initially planning on doing. I will certainly not be doing any kind of off-roading.

A big, manual tranny equipped SUV would be a total waste if you're not going to do any off-roading.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go wash my wife's Expedition.

I say decide what you want, then go shopping. You should be able to score an 03-04 SUV for $15k. Just take your time & don't jump at anything too fast.

Wife has a 2003 Durango 4.7 and though it has been reliable, it only gets 16 mpg on the average. She needs the 4WD because she is a healthcare worker and has to go in the ice/snow. I'm not a fan of SUVs as my Cavalier gets at least double the mileage of the Durango. That 3 bucks+ per gallon of gas sure was painful, but it's manageable at current prices.

My first choice would be the 4-Runner, but it will be out of the budget you listed.

I couldn't function without my trucks.

I've owned SUV's since 1987, and I'll vouch for them. I hate sporty cars with their the seats that put your butt on the floor. I'll gladly pay a few dollars more for gas and have the comfort of sitting up high, and have the safety of a full frame vehicle. And why can't the car makers build cars that are as luxurious as SUV's? I want power lumber support, keyless entry, outside temperature readout, and intregrated garage door opener. I can't find a car with those goodies on it for what I bought my SUV for.

I notice the Ford 500 claims a "elevated seat position".

Pete, I don't see you being happy with a domestic SUV. What about a TOYOTA Highlander?
