Used Hyundai

You're preaching to a BITOGer. Tricia's just an average car owner and is not going to get involved with all the subtleties of maintenance that we do here. She needs a simple, unremarkable, set of wheels that can withstand the vagaries of average maintenance and care.

50/50 blends, 3,000 mile OCIs, keeping a watchful eye on the dipstick, etc. ... not her forte ... she's an artist, a potter, not an auto afficianado. That's just the reality.
Pot? NICE!

Yeah, Hyundai / Kia should be FAR FAR FAR away from her if she can't check the dipstick and do shorter OCI. If she wants a long OCI, not Hyundai for sure. That's going to be tough at $10,000.

See if a Mazda 3 or Mazda 6 is to her liking. Conventional transmission, 2.5 Skyactiv engine is used in nearly every Mazda.

I'd buy a used Mazda w/100,000 miles when compared to the options available... or a TSX (rebadged Euro Honda Accord) from early 2010's-era, K24 engine! or even 2010-era ES.

Be patient, you can find a great car at that price.

I'm pretty well known here for my study on long-term reliability and my car buying service. Unless she's about 200 miles or less from Atlanta though, I wouldn't be able to serve her given the $10k budget. Nearly everything I buy that isn't local is $15k and up.

My advice? Buy the lowest mileage pre-GDI version of the Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima. You probably could get one for under 50k miles from a retiree or older owner, and still have it be perfectly fine transportation for another 7 to 10 years.

The years to look for are...

Hyundai Sonata 2006 - 2010
Kia Optima 2006 - 2010

Another good alternative would be the Hyundai Azera from the same time period. Great cars.

The four and six cylinder versions are perfectly fine. Both have timing chains and so long as they receieve regular oil changes and recommended maintenance she should be fine. I would also add the entry level version of the Toyota Avalon with cloth seats to this mix as well. They aren't common but you may find a few in your neck of the woods.

All the best.

Anything with the 2.4 theta II should be out. I think that includes all Sonatas 2011 and up.
They went to a new architecture 2.5 engine around 2020, don't know if it's any better.

Me personally, I had no problems with my 2.4 Theta II, but, I ran 10w30 full synthetic in it. The oil stayed cleaner looking notably longer with an OG Fram Ultra, also. Nevertheless I got rid of it with about 95K, hit a deer and it needed body work that I didn't want to claim on insurance, needed brakes as well and some other maintenance, plus I was bored with it. My brother in law has a used car lot that specalizes in selling cheap cars to immigrants, and he kept bugging me to sell it to him. I finally gave in and he gave me the full KBB private party value, so it was time.

My Sonata was a 2012 with a 6 speed manual, it was the last year of the manual in the Sonata. That was the best part of the car. It makes a slow car more entertaining to bang gears with it.

Side note, I had a 2007 Kia Rondo with the port-injected 2.4 Theta I, gave it away to my stepdaughter with 135K and it ran a couple of years after that until she wrecked it. Burned zero oil even running 10K oci while driving Uber on M1/M1HM 10w30. Of course those 10K OCI were fairly short time wise as I was piling up the miles fast driving Uber after getting off my day job.

My Dad in his later years had a 2009 Sonata with the Theta II MPI engine, which he bought new. It was flawless, and still is with another family member. Overall a decent car. Here it is just over a year ago, when I took it for a drive, to decide what to do with it.

Yeah, no.

Theta I G4KC had CVVT on the intake cam only.

Theta II MPI G4KE came out in as a mid-cycle refresh in 2009 Sonata. It added CVVT on the exhaust cam, becoming dual CVVT and ran through the 2010 model year.

Theta II GDI G4KJ came out in the 2011 Sonata.
