Used auto recycling for MI

Where does everyone in MI recycle their used auto fluids?

People tell me to go to a gas station and they'll take it... but I went and they gave me a lot of hassle about keeping the oil clean, and I had to fill out a form. I try to keep the used oil clean but sometimes leaves/dirt falls into the drain pan - what am I to do?

Where do you go to deposit your used brake fluid, engine oil, ATF, and anti-freeze in MI?

In NJ I went to our county recycling center 2-3 times a year (pre-scheduled) and they'd take anything from oil filters, to car batteries, to anti-freeze.

Don't you have an Autozone or Advanced Auto?? For some strange reason they only take engine oil. Now if I wanted to break their regulations-I could telll you to mix any other oils in with motor oil and take it in. Then tell them its Motor Oil. But I wouldn't tell you to do that

Antifreeze can generally be dumped into the Public Sewer system (not storm sewers !!! )

Murray's and AutoZone will take it. Actually, it is my understanding that they will take motor oil and ATF, but nothing else. Radiator fluid is more difficult. I normally dump it into a sink drain (sanitary sewer) with the faucet running at full blast (this is what the Detroit Water and Sewerage Dept told me). You could also try to drop it off with a place that does radiator flushes, like many oil change places. I'm not sure about steering or brake fluid, but I would be very tempted to just mix them in with the oil incognito and dump it at the local AZ. Perhaps the city or county will take them, though. If I had any gear oil, I wouldn't think twice about dumping it into the motor oil.

Lithgow Council are much more advanced.

I rang them about oil/antifreeze.

They replied "screw the lid on really tight, and throw it in the landfill".

I thought that they would then run over it with a D-9.

They said yes, but screwing on the lid helped minimise the environmental contamination.

I donate it to farmers with blackberry issues, or people with oil fired furnaces.

What a riot! Yeah, I'm sure that little plastic lid will do a lot of good. I'm actually rather suprised that there's no recycling available down there.

in Canberra, there is a great recycling set-oup for oil.

You upend a 20 litre drum in the trough, and it gets pumped into a tank.

Pick up an empty 20 litre drum, and take it home to fill bakc up.

Over 90% of the oil sold in that state is recycled.
