US, Philippines vow joint defense ‘anywhere in the South China Sea’

And yet it wasn't too long ago that the Filipino population rallied with Duerte's anti-USA sentiment. Everybody wants to be anti-USA until they need protection.
The polls at the time of the average person in the Philippines showed they were still very pro American and Anti Chinese.

Do you think Washington DC represents the average American citizen's views very well? Same thing.

They were experiencing a big increase in crime and drug usage. Duterte promised tough actions on both but looking back now, the police went too far.

No big deal. Really, the Chinese sailors just want some R&R in Olongapo. They've heard how cheap bar fines are and some wild and crazy the bar girls are there.

Also the beer is very good.

Had my fair share of that liquid as well. One Red Horse that I didn’t finish. Swill.

If I typed the real vision I stilll have of that place,,I'd would be in the ban for life seat here...

I see, Duterte was very outspoken against the USA but good to know their general population still has high approvals of the US.

Should have the Air Force return to Clark AFB after volcano ?

I honestly have no idea. Outright I'd say no because that'll involve moving more equipment and stuff around where we're already starting to stretch thin but strategically, we may have to. Locals may like the money that'll pour in for a little bit but not after a while.

I think that has changed quite a bit since they left. FedEx has a big distribution center there. A airport terminal was built to take load off of Manila and some other companies have moved in over the years.

The placement of our military in the Philippines is critical to our upcoming war with China. It's inevitable.
You are exactly correct.
and BTW, the people of the Philippines love the American people. I wonder how many people know, they grew up watching our TV programs. The older group knows EVERY American MUSIC HIT from the 50's 60's 70's and 80's
Old told timers remember WWII American planes getting shot down. they had the greatest respect for us. One spoke in horror to actually seeing American soldiers fall out of the plane.

The people all speak ENGLISH, all street signs, public buildings, products for sale are English in all the main industrial/financial centers of the country such as Manila who's malls, condos and stores would put many American malls to shame.
The Philippine people who came here for a better life, did it the right way, some waited for over 10 years for permission to come over legally. They actually believe you go to school to learn and get a successful position in life. They are a generous people, often helping their own get educated and successful using their own money.
A supermarket in Manila will have all the products and more from USA companies labelled like you see them here.

The people still respect us but then we have the politicians and they are like politicians all over the world, most are corrupt and there was a time Marcos walked all over his people while the USA do to its importance militarily looked the other way, ignored the torture chambers illegal detentions. The people after an uprising kicked out our warships, like hello? Who can blame them.

Now we got a Marcos relative in office once again, the educated people of the country are in horror but in this country the poor and rural areas rule. Promise them everything and they vote accordingly. Sound familiar, think about that. (but dont post, no politics)

They threw us out years ago. Now they want us back. Crazy world we live in.

My memory is not good but as I recall the ones that wanted the US out were the communists, the New Peoples Army faction that was prevalent back then and still exists today in some parts. They were killing US servicemen off base.

duterte is complicated. he wasn’t as much anti-american as he was totally anti-obama and anti-biden, and anti-makati and anti-globalist. it was obama’s fecklessness that ceded the south china sea to the prc, despite the international court of justice’s solid finding in favor of the philippines. obama’s ambassador to manila, philip goldberg, then made astonishingly vitriolic, personal, attacks on duterte during the latter’s presidential campaign. duterte’s popularity at home had way, way more to do with his war on drugs and corruption. isn’t it ironic that washington, which supported the marcos family, then helped boot them into exile, now embraces marcos jr.?

Well said

They are getting two Cyclone class patrol boats from the USN which should suit them quite well in their strategy. Also in the mix are a couple of USCG patrol boats which are not as good but still something.

Back in the Obama era they got three of the USCG WHEC cutters which were 50 plus years old and were beaten up. Still, they were pretty much free. I heard that one of them had the twisted hull which was a rumor back in my time. They promptly ran one onto a reef which took it out of service for quite a while. No parts. They drink fuel like crazy too especially when the turbines are online.
