Hey guys,

I need some audio help.

For my senior project, I’m planning to re-narrate a video that has rather poor narration (difficult to hear) and an audio background. The video is currently in VHS format and I intend for it to stay that way.

I have been loaned an older amplifier and mixer, along with a normal headphone/mic combination and an audio cable. I’m unsure of how to connect this set-up to make it work.

Here are some pictures of the equipment.

Audio cables that I’ve been given so far:

Do I:

1. Connect audio source to Line one on the mixer. What kind of cable do I use?
2. Connect microphone to Line two “microphone” port. Do they make adapters for ¼” microphone ports?
3. Connect ¼” cable from output on mixer to “TAPE/TUNER” on the amplifier. Do they make ¼” audio to RCA audio adapters?
4. Connect “SPEAKERS” port on amplifier to the “AUDIO IN/OUT” port on my VCR.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like the mixer is a mono channel.

Hmmm

Looks really funky to me!

Looks like a Coax cable out on the mixer?
I would say play around with all options! My idea would be to talk over the bad narration or to mute the sound.

Those plugins are too old for me. hahaa

sorry

Is the funky narration the only audio on the tape? If so, then you're just audio dubbing over. I am sure there's a more integrated way to do it ..it was easy when I did wedding videos ..but my hi-fi deck was setup for it. It was just a flick of the switch to audio or video dub. Just make a copy of the tape without audio inputs from the master ..put your voice input as the audio input to the recording.

I don't think you need that mixer at all.

#1: Use an audio (or video for that matter) cable with RCA plugs at each end. A video cable will work fine in this application.

#2: Adapters to connect XLR microphones to 1/4" mike jacks are available, though you might consider getting a microphone with the correct plug instead due to cost.

#3:Yes, 1/4" audio to RCA adapters are available.

#4: No, DO NOT connect speaker-level inputs to the line-input of your VCR (or anything else for that matter!) This could cause damage.

You should connect the output of the mixer to the line-input of your VCR and then connect the line-output of the VCR to the amplifier. The VCR always passes whatever it's seeing on the line-input to the line-output unless it's in playback mode. I assume you have speakers for the amplifier--if not, forget it and use a TV set or a pair of computer speakers to listen to the output of the VCR.

I should mention that you will probably need two VCRs--the functionality Pablo is talking about disappeared from mass-market VCRs at least 10 years ago.
