750cc Ural crankcase only holds about two quarts, recommended oil is any automotive 20w-50, recommended OCI is 2,500 km. This sometimes means changing oil on during the trip. Not the end of the world but not what I want to be doing while traveling, either.

I will be installing an external (spin-on) filter and cooler which I expect to increase the capacity considerably and lower the oil temperature at least a little bit, and running premium synthetic 20w-50 formulated for V-Twins. Once I know how much more oil the system will hold with this mod I will post here.

I will be sending a sample out to test at 2,500 km after this installation to see how the oil is doing and see if an extended OCI seems reasonable.

Any guesses on what the oil analysis will show?

It depends on if your going to rack up miles quickly, or over say a years time. leaving the bike as you got it would probably be fine. I read somewhere the Ural makes a deeper oil pan for the engine which would give it a 4 qt capacity. You didn't say what year your bike is, but being you said you want to add a spin on oil filter, I'm thinking it's over 10 years old. There's a dealer in Ohio that seems pretty up on what's the hot setup with Urals. He has some U-tube videos up that might give you some ideas.,,

Does this have a wet clutch? I don't think the V-twin motorcycle oils are wet cluch safe? However I don't see a modern synthetic 20W-50 failing in 2500 km if the oil you're using now is not wrecked when you change it out.

I don't think you have much to worry about, the engine uses ball and roller bearings for the crank and rods same as the old Dnepr and BMW R71, the oil you are considering is many times better than it ever got new. Higher iron would be my guess.

Urals are Dry Clutch.

What is that like 1553 miles? Is that a normal OCI?

unless there's something i don't know about URAL engines id have no issue running a modern quality oil for 3000-5000 with an oil filter.

Yes, that's the factory recommendation.

The engines are clunky and loose and run hot, they are the Russian version of a BMW if that explains anything.

From what I can tell a lot of the wear is in the valve train, it's unsophisticated, shall we say, as is the oiling system. I'm thinking higher zinc is probably going to be better.

In fairness, the original intent of this bike was to take a fire team on a short and probably one-way trip, a form of mechanized cavalry, if you will. It's not a touring bike, but it does seem that if the RPMs are kept down to a reasonable level they can be durable.

I will be doing some oil analysis to see how the additive package holds up, how the oil is shearing down, and how effective the stock filter is. I will post the results as I get them.
