I've tried doing updates under the device manager but no luck. It's a dell optiplex 330.the video controller properties says"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver" Driver unknown....I tried and it says cannot find the necessary hardware...... Only certain sites are allowed, almost all are blocked.

assuming this is NOT a fresh install, go to the c: drive and look for a folder called " dell" , then open it and go through the folders and run all the setup files until you gind the video driver. install THEN run windows update.

if your work hasnt blocked it, go to www.driveridentifier.com and run their tool

Call the IT dept?

Those guys usually get quite ticked off if you do anything to their computers.

Look for the Service Tag on the machine Dave. All Dells have one (they might also have an asset tag, but that's not the one you want).

Go to Dell's website. Since this is an Optiplex click, business -> support and then plug in the asset tag number into the box where it asks for it. This will give you a listing of all the drivers/software that are for that specific machine's hardware configuration. My old 2005 Inspiron is still in the database so this Optiplex will be too.

The only caveat being that it might list two different graphics drivers for the "standard" GPU and whatever the upsale GPU was.

Regular users can't install drivers where I work. Not sure why any IT dept would allow users to make system level changes. Are you sure you have the privs to do this?

Delete all video drivers in Device Manager, including Standard VGA, reboot, then try to reinstall the drivers. If a Standard VGA or Intel Video driver is in there, it sometimes has to be removed before anything else can be successfully changed/added.

It says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) I tried the reinstalling, nothing.

Yeah, it's generally considered bad form to mess with a work computer. That's why they are locked down, and why people like me have jobs.
