Believe it or not, I still have the family basic plan with a flip phone. No text, internet, etc. etc. just a phone. Well, wife has been bugging me and maybe she's right. Time to move up. Which phone would you recommend from Sprint that is free with a two year service plan? So many to choose from. I'm totally lost.

Don't get the Optimus S. My wife's had it for a for almost 2 years and its quite flaky. It might be better with a bigger SD card, as it runs out of room once you get some apps loaded on it.

It's not.
I have the Optimus V, pretty much the same phone except that it's Virgin Mobile's, which is technically Sprint. I had issues with the phone randomly rebooting itself and the Android Forums said that the microSD card that comes with the phone is excrement, get a bigger, better one and your problems will be solved. They got better, but they're not solved. The phone also has the bad habit of losing the 3G connection and the only way to get it back is to reboot. In the grand scheme of things, not a huge prioblem, but a PITA nonetheless.
Also, I still get "low memory" warnings on some updates, and I've moved everything possible to the SD card.

Hmm... I have a friend who has the LG Optimus S and she's been happy enough to recommend it to me.
Like the OP, I have an old Sprint plan known at the Free & Clear Family Plan. However, over the years, Sprint has thrown some "incentives" my way so our phones have unlimited texting and data, but it's "dumb", limited data capabilities, not those of a true smart phone. (We have the LG Rumor Touch.)
We've been thinking about upgrading to smart phones, but it means that we have to essentially abandon our current plan and start fresh like I'm a new "Joe" walking in off the street, rather than a 13-year loyal Sprint customer. I'm having a hard time getting past that and if it's going to be the case, may consider switch to Verizon or T-Mobile.
If we do stick with Sprint, it's likely I'll just dish out the $100/phone and get the iPhone 4 8 GB model. It's basically the same thing as my latest-generation iPod Touch which I really like.

Lol, I used to have an old, very basic plan grandfathered from a long time ago for only $20 as I used the phone very little. My wife "updated" the plan and added another line for $90/month. I was [censored]. I had to wait 2 years to get a better plan. Now I pay $80 for 4 lines and no service contract at T-mobile. They are all smartphones (unlocked iphones and android phones), but no texting or data plan (helps my kids to focus more on driving).
You want smart or dumb phone? I had the LG Rumor Touch, and it was nice. It was "dumb", but had full qwerty keyboard, could web sruf, email ,etc easily. Wife has Samsung Replenish --- which is on the low end of smart phones. The phone itself hasn't given us any problems either. It works fine. Uconnect didn't like it when we updated Android on it, but that's not the phone's fault.
Spend a little and get an iphone. You'll be happy. Believe me, I was pretty much anti-apple until I got an iphone in Feb. I'd never be w/o one now. I prefer it 10x over my wife's Android.

I really like the Galaxy 2 phone, but it's 199.99. Ouch. Wife is eyeing an iphone, not free either. You think if I did make the leap and bought one of those two phones, would their respected technology hold up for a couple of years? I mean like computers, within 6 months, your already out of date.
I don't really ever consider phones to be out of date (like computers). Sure, there will always be new models every year, but your "old" phone will still be able to make calls and do everything it always has. Most plans/contracts allow for a new phone every 22-24 months. Some, every year. I would highly recommend an iphone. I have never been a fanboy, never owned ipad, i-anything, Apple-anything until Feb of this year. To me, it's so much better than Android (after playing/looking at my wife's phone and comparing).
Best Buy was running an ad this week for an IPhone 4 8gb for 49.99. I donated my upgrade to my wife since I was due and upgraded her to the IPhone... needless to say now I want one.. hahah. The ONLY thing I don't like about the IPhone is it is not storage upgradeable... I suppose when her upgrade comes along in a few months I might bite for another if they have a good deal on it. Bad thing about it is that you pay the sales tax on the retail price which was about $58...
That does suck about Apple -- you can't just stick in a larger micro-SD card to increase your memory. That, and their stupid chargers.
