I just picked up a Infiniti Q50 Red Sport. Has the 3.0l twin turbo. Manual says an oil change every 10k miles. But [censored], I'm nervous to go that far, but gonna do it. I was thinking of getting a used oil analysis with the first oil change. Is that advised with the factory fill, and what do you do if you see wear metals in the oil the first time?

I think this isn't typically advised on the factory fill. There will be tons of wear metals, and build material (silicon etc) in that sample that wont be there in following samples. I think I would get the third run analyzed.

Also, with that car... I would do something like a 5,000 mile first change. I'm sure you could go longer, but but 5,000 the break in should be complete so you can dump that fill. Thats just opinion. some would do it sooner, some later.

If you bought the vehicle new then change at 1000 miles to get the break in and build materials out then go to 5k with used oil analysis to start to establish trends

How long are you going to keep the car? That about the diff oil and the trans oil? This post of a new Toyota used oil analysis will show the drop in metals in the oil . does it make a difference i do not know . I worked at an equipment leasing company that leased and repaired forklifts Ford vans sweepers etc and they never had the oil changed early and lasted long enough, I change the oil early in my vehicles click then click.

I have not seen a single first hand report of anyone who took the time to consider this choice; but then turned around and reported way later that they regretted the choice they made.

So do whatever will make you feel better, as getting confirmation of your existing beliefs to boost your mental health is more important.

What do you do if you see wear metal in the first oil change? Nothing. It's a new engine that's breaking in so IMO there's no point in getting a used oil analysis on FF oil. I would wait until at least the third OCI. The last couple of new cars I've owned had the first change @ 3,000 miles. Wanted to get the break in debris out but also didn't want to dump all the additives in the FF oil too soon either.

I like this idea. I just changed the oil at 4,870 miles. With Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 and a bosch premium filter. Will change again at 10k. Then every 10k and a used oil analysis at 20k. Thanks, everyone.

I actually have the same exact car and I went 5000 miles. Personally, I tried to will myself to do the 10k with the assurances of the dealership but I just couldn't do it. I say, much like a lot of things in life, it really depends on how you drive.

Me personally, I do a lot of spirited driving going upstate NY for work and a lot of city driving when I'm back home in Jersey City. For those reasons, I decided to just change it at 5000 miles. The oil came out very metallic so I'm satisfied.

Since then, I've logged close to 2000 miles and will do another change at 10,000 miles. Once I do that change, I'll most likely just go 7500 miles in between.

I wouldn't get a used oil analysis for your first change. It seems pointless. You KNOW there's going to be a lot of metals during initial break in. It's not going to tell you anything informative in my opinion. BUT, truth be told, I almost did the same because I wanted to keep a good history log of the wear on the engine. I'll start my used oil analysis from 10k miles when the engine has been nicely broken in and oil has been fully cycled.

Agree completely...no more than 5k on the first change - it's turbo and is it also DI?

I like to do a factory fill ups just for general curiosity. If you know going in that metals will be high and not useful for trending, then you can start to assess things like antifreeze (leaks/manufacturing defects), fuel dilution, etc.

I agree that early changeout of transmission fluid and diff lube is prudent, and though some are of the mind that this means 1000 miles, I think 10k or so is ok.
