Hi,
I have a number of gallons of schaeffer's 5w-40, for use in our MB diesels. It is a good, robust oil. I also run 5w-40 in my E30 BMW 318i. I have historically run shel rotella syn.
I put schaeffer's 5w-40 in the engine, with a new Mann oil filter, and while at temperature, the engine runs super smooth and quiet, at startup, I have something I never did before - I suppose it is lifter tick!
I start the engine, and get tap tap tap tap tap tap at a regular interval. revving the engine out of gear does not help it. After the first load cycle, such as accelerating to 25 MPH, then stopping at a stop sign, it subsides at idle and up to about 1000-1500 RPM. After the second load cycle, it stops to about 2000 RPM. After the third load cycle, it seems to go awya completely. I never shift cold aboe 3000 rpm.
When I start the car, the oil pressure light goes out immediately. That means that oil is moving and moving well. However, I still get this taping noise that sure seemss to me to be lifters - Ill have to listen closer this weekend to pinpoint the source (timing chain tensioner, perhaps???).
The oil filter is the cartridge type, so there is no ADBV inherent to the filter.
Ive never had this problem with rotella syn, regardless of starting temperature.
Any thoughts???
Thanks,
JMH
