Unexpected Surgery

There's no real easy way to tell this so I'll just jump in. The other day my appandex was putting me in a state of extreme pain. I could not stand up, cough, laugh or anything. All I could do was just lie down on the floor curled up like a ball and not move.

At first when I woke up that morning it was just a stomach ache and it would go away after I eat breakfast. Well on the contrary, I ended up throwing back up my breakfast. Sorry for those who have weak stomachs. The pain was not getting any better and was only getting worse and worse. After about 2 hours my parents rushed me to the E.R and they took me in for X-rays, tests etc... Turns out my appendex was ready to burst. I ended up going into surgury and next thing I know, I woke up drugged up on morphine(I didn't know they still make that stuff) I ended up staying overnight at the Hospital and watching TV. I fell asleep here and there and had about 3 shots total of morphine in about the 24 hours I stayed there. I was perscribed some medicine to help for the pain and man does it work!! It's called Davorstat??????? Despite some difficulities sleeping last night my body is normal and functioning well today. I have a band wrapped around me with 3 stiches in my stomach. I can walk around just fine but I do need to take it slow. I won't be able to drive for at least a week or so until the pain subsides and I can walk like normal

Get well AB. I have had kidney stones in the past and the symptoms all indicated appendicitus.

That's the second appendix to go berserk here in a week or so. Glad you're okay. I hope the nurses are pretty and don't look like nurse Diesel in that old Mel Brooks movie. Then again, since you're currently high as a kite you probably wouldn't know the difference.

Similar thing happened to me when I was 18. The odd thing was I would get the same symptons every year, I thought was a 24 hour virus.

Then one day it got very bad as you describe and on the 2nd day my parents took me to the ER (2am). I had emergency surgery a few hours later and spend a week in the hospital. I had a high white blood cell count due to it started to burst. I went back to school/work a week after coming home. But it took me at least a month to fully recover.

Morphine isn't all it's cracked up to be for this type of pain. It will put you to sleep though.

I hope you feel much better soon, slow and steady will get you back as good as new.

Hang in there A/R. Morphine is awesome; when I broke my wrist and arm apart 3 years ago, it solved the pain for me. Only bad thing is the antedote stuff they give you immediatly after injecting the morphine; it stings like crazy.

Did you hear about that drug they give some people before surgery, it doesn't numbe the pain, but causes amnesia afterwards?
I don't think I want any of that.

I had to have an emergency appendectomy on June 28th. I can certainly sympathize with you. It is not a pleasant ordeal.

The bright spot is that your recovery should be fairly quick. I was back on my mountain bike last Saturday, less than 2 weeks after surgery. I even went for a 2 hour ride today, with no pain. My endurance took a serious nose-dive, though.

You may have read about my wonderful appendectomy experience in the earlier thread. Suffice it to say mine actually burst before they removed it. Ooh, talk about a world of hurt.

Anyway, I definitely feel for you. Get better soon. You know, the thing that worked for me was sleeping on my stomach for a full night. It helped to stretch my abdomen back out. I went from being pain-ridden and barely able to walk to almost pain free overnight (this was a few days after surgery). If it doesn't hurt too much, you might want to try that.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I am taking 2 kinds of pain killers. One is Motrin and the other one is Davorsat?? Both pretty potent products and work well. My sister is getting married tommorow(16th) and I hope I can perform well there. I can move about but I do have to take it slow. This is only my 2nd time tonight being upstairs as it can be somewhat painful for me to walk up stairs.

I am grateful they caught the appandex in time since learning it can be life threatning. I'm still trying to soak it all up still, just the reality it happened so fast so quickly. I thank everyone again who replied in this post and I do hope I am fully mobile speedwise in the next coming days,,,,,,AR

Yes that's it! Thanks T-bird. I need to get better A.S.A.P as tonight is my sister's wedding rehearsal and tommorow is the wedding

But wheelchair or no wheelchair, I'll be there

Darvocet and Alc won't go very well together.

Darvocet(R)= Propoxiphene (chemical name)

Darvocet is good stuff.. i got some for a toothache last year from the dentist. Vicodin seems to work better for me w/o doubling up on pills. but of course you get what is perscribed.

glad everything came out ok (figuratively and literally). it's pretty scary to be in so much pain that you can't take care of yourself.

Hey Airborne Ranger, glad you're doing well. Be cautious about doing anything requiring Deep Thought while you're taking the Good Stuff. FWIW, I had (elective) hernia surgery a couple years ago between summer classes and fall semester. I was on Hydrocodone, and it made the pain mostly disappear. It's Good stuff, Maynard . The Doctor told me not to drive for two weeks. I thought it was because of the sutures. WRONG!
I figured out why, when I looked at my first week's class notes during the second week. Didn't make a dern bit of sense. I'd of sworn I was thinking clearly. Didn't feel blitzed at all. Scary.

I had an unexpected surgery back in '89. I thought I'd pulled a muscle in my upper left shoulder and it just nagged for a couple of weeks. It went away for about two days then came back with a weird "symptom". When I'd lie on my back, every time my heart would beat I could hear and feel a weird "squish" sound. This freaked me out and I went to the doctor...who sent me to the hospital...who said "You've got a hole in your lung and it could fully collapse anytime." !!

After almost three weeks in the hospital and three surgerys ending with a 10" scar, I went home. Funny thing that I remember is when I was allowed to eat normal food after the big surgery, my sister brought in a pizza from one of the lower quality places (Peter Piper Pizza for those that might be familiar). I tell you what, that was one of the best pizzas I've EVER had!!
