My admittedly modest intersection with EV is the installation of a Tesla charger at our house (full 60A capacity) and the ownership of a plug in hybrid. Plugging the car in takes seconds. Leave it for the night, get it unplugged later. Always ready. Never a line. No pulling in/out of a gas station.
So very easy. Far easier than filling up a gasoline car.
The cost/mile with our electric rates is about 1/3 that of gasoline in the same car. We did a road trip to Disney in the car, so, we have a good idea of the MPG.
We don’t have the electric plan that allows for discounted rates at night, because the terms and conditions from Dominion Power are onerous, and would preclude charging, or running the laundry, during the day, which we often do.
So, even paying flat rate for electricity, we are at 1/3 the cost/mile with EV, with much more convenient “refueling”.
EV is a very attractive option. Plug in hybrid offers the best of both worlds, at the moment, and the increased cost/complexity ($10,000, roughly, on MSRP over a regular hybrid) of the plug in hybrid will pay for itself in about 80,000 miles. Not the fastest payoff, but a payoff nonetheless.
A pure EV would result in far faster payoff because of the “refueling” savings and lower maintenance.
We have been looking at an EV as a replacement for the S600. The silence of electric cannot replace the “soul” of the V-12, but economics are compelling, and the acceleration is still there.
