Hey guys. Let me first start by saying I tried the search function and could find the answer I was looking for.
Which of the 2 is the better oil as far as add pack and basestock. It seems that some stores have ultra for 4 bucks more a quart than platinum then a different chain store has them similarly priced. I just want to know which is the all around winner. And what's with the Pennzoil "gold" stuff. I assume it's a group 2 or so. What's got more moly and anti-wear agents and which would clean better of the 3.
I saw the gold and ultra(I think) for the same price(6 bucks a quart).

Thanks

Pennzoil themselves claim Ultra cleans/keeps clean the best. Gold is for folks that just want a synthetic blend and can't help themselves to go full-synthetic, but if that is the case just use some Motorcraft, just my opinion.

If you buy Pennzoil for PCMO apps, it's either Pennzoil Conventional or Pennzoil Platinum / Pennzoil Ultra; your pick. Gold has a certain market because of false presumptions still out there about synthetic, IMO. Saw it at my Honda dealer last week!

As far as basestock quality, Ultra is the best. Their TBN is around 12-13 by most virgin oil analysis. Impressive oil, that was SM PU, though SN is still the most stout Pennzoil PCMO, on paper.

A lot of folks like Platinum because it is more than enough for them, not extending oil changes out past 7,500? Platinum is probably the better choice for a lot of apps. Ultra has a little bit more potential as an extended drain oil.

Ultra is like the extended performance of Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

Seems to be some confusion about whether the new SN GF5 ultra is a.group 3 gtl or a group 4 pao but by the look of the tds it appears to be a pretty darn impressive oil on paper, but we will soon see!

If you pay close attention, Ultra also claims the best wear protection with a footnote: 5w30. At least, this is what it is saying on the jug I have.

Great explanations. Thanks guys. The auto parts house I shoo at has ultra cheaper than platinum. Ultra it is.

Thanks again

If it does not bother you to shop at a store that exploits its employees, then Walmart has it pretty cheap in 5 QT jugs.

I've hardly have ever seen any Pennzoil Gold (blend). There was some at the local Big Lots! for a while. But at $4 a quart I passed...

Really? Pics!? I suppose I could just go outside and look at my 5 quart jug.

The only place I seen it was at Menards.

PP turns in consistently good used oil analysis, for what that's worth.
Ultra is PP+. A better oil in every way, which most of us don't really need but may want.
Gold is so rare as to be virtually unknown.
I would feel good about using either Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra in any application.
I don't know if Euro spec PP is still available, but Euro spec PU is, although either would be hard to find unless ordered online or maybe from a distributor.
Pennzoil has stated that these oils both use Grp III basestocks.
