"According to Phil Hamilton, national fuel addition sales manager, Schaefer Manufacturing Co., “In higher concentrations, sulfur served as a natural biocide in diesel fuel, killing off bacteria that were present due to contamination. However, the reduced sulfur levels in ULSD allow bacteria to survive and breed. If unchecked, these bacteria can spread in storage tanks to areas above the fill line, where it can avoid exposure to biocide additives and create a constant source of contamination. Bacteria can also grow in a vehicle’s fuel tank, particularly if that vehicle is only occasionally used or put in storage between seasons.”

Interesting. What are the symptoms of running bacterially contaminated diesel? Do the bacteria degrade the fuel or excrete water into it?

plugs filters

It will be interesting when they take the sulfur out of heating oil, many tanks sit partially filled through the summer months.

I don't see ULSD being a problem.
Here in Norway, we have had ULSD, since the end of 2004.
In Sweden, they got it in 1990(below 50 PPM)and in 1992, it was below 10 PPM.

Some underdeveloped countries, still doesn't have it, though :-)

When did you get ULSD in the US :-) ?

Here in the Nordic countries, it is not even possible to buy diesel with more than 10 PPM.

I don' think so.
I don't think the temperature is so much colder here, than in northern parts of the US.
I can see that where you come from, it is probably a bit warmer than here, though.

In the summer, the temperature her, can go up to 30-33 degrees celsius, and it is normally around minus 5 to minus 15 degrees in the winter(but, some times a bit colder).

This year we have had snow since 17-18th of December, but it varies a lot, depending on where in Norway or Sweden you live(north or south).
The coast near areas, is a lot warmer, because of the warming effect from the gulf stream.
