"Uh-oh!" moments behind the wheel?

I was 17 and just got my Eclipse two weeks prior, wasnt used to the power, speed, and handling. Since I upgraded from a honda accord I felt like this thing was a big go kart.

I was on a first date, went hiking at a park, on the way out we decided to take the curvy roads. It had been a while since I'd driven the roads down there.

Came up on this turn, posted at 25mph, I had just shifted into 5th gear which means I'm going around 50-55mph. What you cant see is the turn getting progressively sharper up to this point.

Right before I made it to the first visible section of the roadway, a bunch of Harley guys rounded the corner and were coming really close to that yellow line, I freaked and tapped the brakes realizing I was going too fast and that we might hit. Didnt realize I didnt have ABS.

Considering the firestone tires that came with it were hard as a hockey puck, they gripped like [censored], the wheels locked instantly, shifting the cars weight to the front and off the back, I began to oversteer all the way around the turn. Somehow I managed to "drift" sideways between a guardrail and a line of motorcyclists without hitting either. At one point I was basically looking at them through my windsheild because I was so far sideways.

When I finally corrected I was partially in the other lane with a Jeep coming, once I avoided that and got it straight, for reasons absolutely unknown to me, the back end stepped out again and sent me spinning. Once I was going bassackwards I decided to just lock them up and hope for the best because I had no control and no idea where we were going.

Luckily there was a park ranger about 30 seconds behind me and when I explained that I thought I was going to hit a motorcyclist he assured me most of the wrecks in that turn have something to do with them and it was ok.

Almost had it stopped (maybe 5mph) until I slid into gravel which has zero stopping ability. Luckily the information sign I hit did the trick.

I had just washed an waxed it too, hence the frowny face on the hood.

We were both ok, wearing seat belts, only hit going very slow. Car was driveable home but I had to get a wrecker to pull me off of the sign. Accident was ruled a "no fault" on the offical report.

I now have a new rule to keep myself safer: If you don't know, don't go.

Anyone who speeds up when I'm passing had better be sure that I won't get in front of them.

Had one a couple days ago. Was going south on Main St. at Westport Rd. It had been raining and still was. As we approached the stoplight a Mazda 626 decides he wants to turn left right from the other direction in front of us. Going about 35 I slammed on the brakes and the old Festiva doesn't have ABS so we were drifting to the left (all of them do this I've learned this). Forunately he decided not to go and I let off the brake in time and avoided him by inches, thankfully I've also learned to slow down when approaching some stop lighs. Poor mom was in the front at the time said she probably aged 10 years in that moment. That wreck wouldn't of been a good one.

The was best was in the F150. I look up and I see a white chevy car approaching my rear at a high rate of speed. It had been raining. Hmm is she going to stop.. boom! Guess not. The trailer hitch put a hole in the middle of the bumper all the way to the engine block and the dual exhuast cut two round holes all the way down the metal support. All it did was bend one of the duals, tore up the trailer connection and put a couple dimples in the bumper. Darn fine truck!

I have quite a few more unfortunately!!

In the snow, I was on a thoroughfare two lanes in each direction with a center median. The car ahead of me spun, hit the center median, and started coming back toward the right lane where I was. There was some space between us and the car went in front of me, but I thought it would hit the curb and rebound back in front of me. Luckily, for me at least, there was a break in the curb for a commercial driveway, and the car slid up that and not back into traffic.

Glad to hear your experience wasn't any worse!

Some guy walked right off the sidewalk in front of me today as I was accelerating through an intersection right after the light turns green. Hit the brakes to stop from hitting that yahoo, then hit the horn as I slowly passed him. He saw me start moving through the intersection and went anyhow, walking out into the street with oncoming traffic on a green light instead of waiting for 10 seconds for me to go past to jaywalk.

for going bad it went very good. my new rule has kept me from getting many tickets and accidents. i still have fun, occasional top speed runs on deserted interstates and such, but not all the time.

Ekpolk, there are a few reasons why he let you slide. He could have had a prisoner in the back, was end of tour already and was on ot, or simply was out of summonses, lol

My most memorable "uh oh" moment actually was more humorous than anything else.

About 20 years ago I had an '81 Toyota Corolla (RWD) as my beater work car. One morning we had an ice storm, so I very carefully made my way to work. The parking lot was above the level of the road and had a fairly steep driveway leading into it. I tried going up it a couple times, got about halfway up and started spinning--couldn't make it. So, I backed down and backed about 100 yards down the road and got a run at it. I made it up (did I mention the driveway aims you directly at the building?). I tried to turn to head toward the parking area and continued straight for the building("uh oh!"). I then slammed on the brakes, cut the wheels hard right, and locked it down. I ended up sliding sideways at about 5 mph. into a dumpster at the corner of the building.

Fortunately I've never had a really scary close call.

there was the day i did get clocked by the state patrol boy at around mmm....115mph ish? hah.

cruising on an open interstate, radar detector starts screaming, no warning, went from nothing to a full radar lock on me. couldnt find the guy anywhere. slammed the brakes and got down below lose-your-license speeds. took the closest exit to drive around and kill some time.

while sitting at the stop light a state trooper comes flying off the exit with his lights on and turns the wrong way. scared the [censored] out of me. when i got back on the interstate to do my last 3 miles to my exit there was a state trooper sitting on the shoulder in the distance, as i got close he turned on his lights and pulled out. almost shat myself, then he pulled over someone else.

This one was on a track so it was very safe, but it still scared the [censored] out of me. I had just bought my S2000 and gone to my first track day ever. I had autocrossed the S2000 a few times without any problems and was actually pretty good.

Unfortunately, it started pouring buckets right as we stage for the warm-up lap. I had brand new Potenza RE-01Rs on the thing so I felt unstoppable. Halfway through the warm up lap, I tap the gas a bit too hard coming out of a corner and the car does a 180 before I realize what has happened. I'm now sliding into the grass runoff, flinging mud all over the inside of the car with the guardrail fast approaching.

Somehow the car came to rest about 10 feet short of the guardrail in a few inches of mud. I caught my breath and pulled back onto the track. I was the laughing stock of the day, having sprayed myself and the car with mud.

I was driving a class 7 sterling with the 3126 cat motor. I heard a loud scream come from the engine compartment. Not long afterward an assortment of warning lights came on. ENGINE WARNING, STOP ENGINE, COOLANT OVERHEAT, etc. This engine uses a small v-belt for the water pump, which had seized up.
