I've always done 4 or 5 quart full fills on my changes...so all the oil goes in...no 1/2 quarts etc.......my HHR for example is 5 quarts specd by GM

I am now faced with a change that requires 3.9 quarts to be used....

So here is the senior moment of the day.....

Pour in 3 quarts and then use the little window on the side of the quart bottle until I'm down just below the 24 mark? (32-9 oz =23)

doh....

Ok now I'm really confused lol....calls for 3.9 quarts...that is 3 quarts and 9 ounces correct?

Wouldn't you want to put 3 quarts in and then 9 ounces from the 4th bottle? If I do it that way I'd only be taking 9 ounces out of the 4th bottle leaving it almost 3/4 full(the 4th bottle)...if I put all 4 quart in wont that overfill by 3/4 of a quart?

32 oz in a quart right?

Wow..either I am making this way to difficult or not understanding...

btw this is for my VTX so over 1/2 quart extra is a big deal

One tenth of a quart is 3.2 ounces, so multiply that by 9 to get nine tenths of a quart (.9 quarts = 28.8 oz).

All you will have left over will be 3.2 oz as previously stated above.

It's not 3 quarts and 9 ounces. It's 3 quarts and 28.8 ounces.

3.9 quarts is 39 1/10th quarts, and 1/10th of a quart is 3.2 ounces, so 39 times 3.2 is 124.8 ounces total. Confused yet? :P

Aha...so when they say 3.9..they are not meaning 3 quarts and 9 ounces...

So the next thing after 3.9 would be 4 full quarts.....

darn...sometimes I wonder how I made it through life this far...lol...

Thanks

Or you could add 3 1/2 quarts and start it up to prime the filter then shut it off.

Check the dip stick and add accordingly until it at the full mark.

Why over complicate your life?

It's just an oil change...

Goose, when I have a senior moment, which seems to happen on a regular basis these days, I take a nap. Which is exactly what I'm going to do right now.

When I've had to do partial quart OCI's, I just poured off the overage first, then dumped everything into the engine. In your case you'll have to pour off 3.2 ounces which is a bit tricky.

As others have said, I'd just dump in the whole 4 quarts and ride on but do whatever you feel comfy with.

And 3.9 US quarts = 3.699 liters, so no help from the metric system. I'd love to know why Honda engineers designed the sump to be exactly 3.2 ounces, or 10% shy of 4.0 US quarts knowing the US was the primary market for this bike. Me thinks its Japanese engineers having a laugh at our expense.

That's what I ended up doing after taking a poll over at the VTX Cafe on what other owners do
