OK, after reading about Ubuntu here, I decided to check it out. I went to the Ubuntu page, dwnld'd the desktop, 32bit image, used Nero to put it on a CD (and verify the data) and attempted to boot off of it.

No joy.

I read about checking the sums? or something of the file, so I dwnld'd winmd5sum, and it verified my dwnld was valid.

On this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD it says if you only see one file on the CD, you burned it wrong. You should see many files. However, it doesn't explain this. I see only one file, the .iso image. So what did I do wrong?

I need some clarification here before I go chasing my tail. Nero says it's capable of handling .iso images. Is it suposed to split the image into all those files and burn that?

Please explain.

Thanks

You have to burn the iso to the disc not copy it.

I don't have NERO in front of me but it's something like this. It's one of the menu choices.

Goto File and then Open.
Select the file you downloaded with the .ISO extension
Then select "Burn image to disc"

Hope it helps.

Thanks for both of your replies.

I searched for 'iso' on the Nero help I had and all it gave me was a standard definition, which was of no help. Then I saw something about certain features not being included with OEM versions, which I have.

So I decided to punt Nero altogether and dwnld InfraRecorder as the site suggested and do it that way. No problems! Very fast. Now I see all the files that I should.

I have something else to deal with now, but I'll try booting from this disk a bit later and get back to you.

Thanks again.

I just went through a similar situation because I rarely make a disc image and I was trying to do it with a mac. It turns out the disc(s) kept turning out faulty because I had them written at max speed. Set it at 8x and then it worked flawlessly.

Or use a fantastic FREE CD/DVD burner that handles ISO files without any fuss at all:

I don't know why anyone would pay for a CD/DVD burning application when this is available.

Best,

+2. I don't bother buying any CD writer program anymore. This, my friends, is the bomb!

The Nero OEM version came with a dvd drive I bought years ago. As you can tell, I don't use it much. I agree: With all the cd/dvd freeware these days, why pay to upgrade Nero? BTW, I'd never made an iso disc before, didn't really understand the format.

I was able to boot from the Ubuntu disk I made. Played around with it a bit. I was able to mount one of my HD's and see all the files. That's good to know. Pretty slick.

Thanks
