Canonical has unveiled software that will give Android smartphones the ability to run full desktop computer sessions on computer monitors and television sets.

"The processors at the heart of smartphones are approaching the power of low-end laptop processors, so we use the horsepower to power a desktop experience," said Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth. "If you link your phone to a computer monitor and keyboard, then the phone can drive a full desktop session."

I'm not sure how quickly enterprises would embrace this, but I suppose it's just a matter of time.

My 7" Acer tablet has an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, which is a 1 GHz dual-core processor, with 1 GB of RAM. This is within spitting distance of our Dell Inspiron Mini netbook with a 1.5 GHz Intel Atom with 1 GB of RAM.

There is certainly enough processing power here, especially with a light weight OS, to use this like a full-on computer. I'm looking forward to OOo releasing an Android port. I have QuickOffice HD on it now, and it's fairly good. But I think OOo would be even better.

I dunno. Motorola tried this for a while with the whole Webtop thing on their smartphones and I get the sense no one cared. This feels like the same thing.

It's neat. Few will ever use this (outside of IT circles) as an Android app will be faster than any window manager on Ubuntu.

Heck, Ubuntu 11.10 slowed down my 7+ year old laptop. Gave it the heave-ho for Mint 12.

But, as a proof of concept or network device/tester for IT folks, this has possibilities.

Suppose it is possible; what would one do with it??

All it needs is a 23" monitor, DVD burner, gigabit Ethernet port, full size keyboard and a mouse and I will be happy to use the 7" Android tablet as my work desktop :-)

Just because something can be done does not mean it should to be done. Really, what is the point of this exercise? If somebody answers so that all of your stuff would be on the tablet, why would I keep all my stuff on the tablet? So I can take it anywhere! No, that is why they came up with the "Cloud Computing"!

Phone is an internet device but still a phone; Tablet is an internet device but still a tablet; Desktop is an internet device but still a desktop; heck fancy stainless steel LG freeze is an internet device but it is still a freeze!

I thought the article touched on it. When you get a job, the employer will just give you one device - a smartphone which you can use as a phone, but also as a computer.

One less device that I have to issue. Saves money, we buy monitors, keyboards and mice either way...

At the end of the day, the guys walks out with that tablet with him when he leaves the premises? If you IT guys are trying to save money, lots of cheaper integrated devices (i.e. CPU/memory/disk etc built in to the monitor) can be bought probably cheaper than the tablet + monitor. Are you currently issuing both the tablet and the workstation? Do you really believe that workstation can be replaced by a meager tablet?
