I have been running on a 2003 HP laptop for about 3 years now, from 8.04->10.4 and Im not going to move because they still have not fixed the ACPI interface, which means I cannot run with my battery installed and have libsensors running. 10.4 was supposed to fix it. it didnt.

Hmmm....i guess i'd wait - 11.04 doesn't sound very promising-

for someone who wants the functionality of Ubuntu, but want a bit more 'modern' interface, what are the options?

Mint is your best bet, TBird, but I'd go ahead and give 11.04 a shot first. Most of the reviewers (not the guys here, but bloggers and stuff like that) are full of [censored] about half the time. Unity may be bad, but there are alot of people jumping on the unity is bad bandwagon because they want to sound like 1337 d00dz who are too elite for Ubuntu.

If you like a lot of bells and whistles then I recommend the KDE version of Linux Mint.

If you like a functional desktop that does not need a lot of horse power then use the Xfce Version of Linux mint.

I find that the Xfce Linux Mint Version of Deblin meets my needs and has a small footprint. Great for older computers too plus a 32 and 64 bit version.

Below is a handy tip on how to add Icons to the Panel on an Xfce desktop the easy way.

I just finished installing the 11.04 upgrade on my 4 year old Gateway desktop. I like it well enough. The layout looks exactly like the original Ubuntu Netbook Edition. It may not be for everybody. At the login screen, you are given several options, one of which is "classic" mode, for those who don't like the new interface.

Did all your files, internet book marks/settings etc transfer to the 11.04? or do you have to do it manually?

If you upgrade all your setting remain the same. This does not mean you don't have to backup your data, however, as a backup is prudent b4 any major mod.

A CDROM install will overwrite everything.

I did a separate install of 11.04 and don't like it as well as the previous 10.10. Seems to boot a little faster but I hate the interface. Maybe it can all be turned off, but I haven't had time to mess with it.

Hmpf - i even burned the CD for Ubuntu 11.04...but something still prevents me from making the jump...just don't feel 'safe'..

i might also join the crowd that keeps using 10.10...

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 today on my '09 Acer netbook. Everything went smoothly. I really like the interface on the netbook, especially the way the launcher/taskbar/dock thingy auto-hides when an application is launched.
