In server applications, that have multiple hard drives and run in a raid5 configuration you would want different date codes for each hard drive.
Lets say you run a raid5 1TB hard drive configuration with qty4 1TB (storage of 4TB) and qty1 ITB (checksum). Data is spread (stripped/stored) across all qty 4 1TB and the checksum is in the remaining 1TB hard drive. If you have a single HD failure, you can easily restore that HD via the three HDs and the checksum HD. That bad HD has a specific date code or lot number.

"The take-away"
If you have two HDs with the same BAD date code, you sustainability increase the risk of a possible dual simultaneous HD failure. There is good chance the other HD may fail soon. This is a non-recoverable HD restoration.Two failed HDs cannot be restored in a raid 5 configuration.

When used "lost me", basically meant I would never buy "tires" specifically desiring different manufacture dates based on some future event which may or may not happen. Don't know percentages but would imagine the 'may not' probability significantly greater. Been buying and using tires a very long time, never had a recalled one.

That said, to each their own. Looks like 50% of your desire and consideration could be in play.
 
The problem with the hard drive analogy is that the replacement hard drive is truly a just replace the bad unit operation. With tires, you generally are going to have to replace them in pairs (at a minimum).

Thus if you are worried about recalls, then you want the same date codes or paired date codes (and used that way on your setup). The tire manufacturer/retailer is only obligated to replace the bad tire at their cost.

Reality is the odds are low enough to not worry about it.
 
So, as some members know here I purchased in 2017 four Nokian Hakka R2 for Tiguan. They came with 2015 DOT, somewhere in the beginning of 2015.
They were really good in snow and ice first winter, and made maybe 2000 miles (they are on my wife's car, and sometimes that car is not driven for a week).
This year the drop in snow and ice performance is ridiculous. As soon as snow is packed or bit of ice, ABS is running like crazy. Lateral handling in snow, packed snow, is now so so. I am thinking two things here:
1. Age is catching up.
2. Nokian performance is pretty much good when brand new, after that, it is lottery.
 
I worked selling tires for 4.5 years. During that time, I sold on average 2500+ tires per year.

The only recalled tires I ever replaced were the Michelin LTX Ford van size recall from 2012, which went into effect over 2 years before I started selling tires. And I think it was two sets. Which is a .071% recall rate.

I suppose you could come up with a survival plan for the comet that statistically will eventually hit Earth, but what are the chances it will happen?

Also, the people who said just having one recalled due to AWD is a MUCH larger hassle than getting a whole new set are dead-on.

And the hard drive analogy doesn't really work. When a hard drive in a computer system breaks, some percentage of computer power is lost until it is replaced, and when it is replaced with a new one, no other part of the system is affected.

When a tire is recalled, you simply drive in and get replacement tire(s). Nothing is inop between the recall notice and the replacement time. And one or two new tires can certainly affect the system that is a vehicle.

As to general "freshness," most of the customers with oddball cars/sizes, larger sizes (that were generally more expensive) were the pickiest WRT age of new tires, even though they were ordering tires that a $2m/year tire store sold once a decade. No, we will not special order tires for you because our 1.5 year old, warehouse-stored tires aren't fresh out of the molds. They are not unsafe. And I will not call 6 warehouses and have 3 man-hours worth of digging to find you a 3 week newer tire.

A tire that's stored inside a warehouse for 2-3 years is genuinely as good as new.

Yeah, pretty much what I thought. Like your analysis/analogy. In fact, enjoyed reading your entire post and found it informative, illuminating. For bandwidth sake, only quoted first statistical part.
 
Tires "stored' outside, on the vehicle, are going age much faster than anything inside. Wouldn't bother me to get a 1-2 year old tire. Of course, odds are I'll run it bald inside of 4 or so years anyhow, if not bald then close enough to the wear bars to move on. OP is doing 20k/year? What are the odds of wearing out the tire long before it ages out?
