Typical Oil Consumption

In 1986, my 78 Chevy Monza 2.4 I4 used about 1 qt every 3000 miles. Since then, I haven't owned a car that used any measurable amount. 1 qt every 1000 miles is a LOT to me...if you don't babysit the dipstick, you're 3 quarts down by the time you do an oil change? Unacceptable usage. Sounds like that car was broken in HARD, used oil during break-in and wasn't refilled until oil change time.

Sounds like this Focus was a rental!

Good luck with the new engine. I would think that since the dealer did it, you can feel pretty confident in their work. At least it's under warranty. I like your idea of changing the oil frequently during the break-in. You might try using a nice moly-rich dino like Havoline to break it in.

My current car (Mazda 2.5 V6) was purchased new and for the first 20K miles or so it used 1/4-1/2 qt or so during 3000 mile OCI's, but since then has stopped using oil all together. I'm at 45K now and it just never uses any.

Good luck with the focus!

02 F150 4.6 has used 1 quart of oil every 3000 miles since new. Weight or brand or synthetic or regular or blend, 1 quart every 3000 miles.

02 RSX does not burn a drop. Change oil every 10K and never had to add a drop no matter what's in the crankcase.

98 4.0L Ranger never burned a drop.

90 Nissan 2.4L never burned a drop.

98 Explorer 4.0L never burned a drop.

96 Civic never burned a drop.
