2002 Expedition with 4.6 uses about 1.5 to 2 quarts of 5w20 Havoline every 5000 miles, so I started using 5w30 Havoline. Consumption is now about 1 quart per 5000 miles.

Are there any 5w20 oils that would reduce consumption to the 5w30 level?

Every lawnmower or automobile I've put synthetic in has used less oil. My old Camaro used less oil with Amsoil 0w30 synthetic than with Superflow 20w-50 conventional. Thicker oil probably doesn't help much if your rings are stuck. The synthetic seems to loosen things up a bit. I haven't tried the 0w-20 synthetics yet, but they will probably give good results too.

You could try one of the High Mileage oils in a 20wt oil. How many miles do you have? Have you checked the valve seals?

I'd try some Valvoline Maxlife 5W-20 for an OCI just to see what the consumption was like.

I'd also put a catch can in the PCV line. There can be a lot of oil that goes through that, and it's not the best thing for your engine to be burning.

The engine has 88,000 miles. I did an AutoRx treatment at about 60,000 miles. It doesn't smoke. And 1 qt. of 5w30 in 5000 miles isn't bad. But I would rather use 5w20 and not have to add oil between changes.

OK, I bite: Why would you rather use 5W-20 when (apparently) 5w30 cuts your oil consumption by half?

Must be MPGs

My Grand Caravan, purchased new, was using about 3/4ths of a quart of Havoline (non-Deposit Sheild) in about 1200 miles. With Pennzoil Platinum, it used about a half quart in 2500 miles.

I have had good results with Maxlife full synthetic 10W30.

Other have reported reduced consumption with other "high milage" brands such as Castrol High Mileage or Mobil High Mileage.

Redline 5w20 I would bet wouldn't use any because of it's high HTHS and CST value. You could push the OCI longer as well to make up for the added cost.

It will also leave your engine internals spotless because of it's ester content!

Give it a try over two OCI's and see what you get...

My motorcycle didn't like full synthetic (Mobil 1 MXT4 10w-40 as specified), and used about 1/2 qt per 1500 miles. I switched back full dino and the use rate went back to basically none.

Hey C4Dave, i'm not sure how you buy your oil(qts vs. jug), but if you buy by the qt, why not try a mix. A mix such as Valvoline Maxlife(or any oil); 3qts 5w20/3qts 5w30(pretty sure 6qt capacity). That way you'll get a 5w25, Or just try the Valvoline MaxLife 5w20 and see what happens.

BTW, 5w30 will do no harm to your engine. I think a mix will work fine.

1 or 2 qts of oil in 5000 miles wouldn't even get me to thinking about this subject. But I'll throw my few years back commuter car in here. 85 Chevy Caprice Classic.305 4bbl.Bought used with 88k on speedo. Some cooked on crud on rocker arms etc.Ran Castrol 10w30.It used a qt every 1200 to 1500 miles.Swapped to Syntec 10w30.Used a Qt every 2500 miles or so.Swapped to Amsoil 10w30.Used a qt every 3500/4000 miles or so.Drove car on 20 to 25 thousand mile OCIs with ac delco filter every 7500 until it had 252k on it.Ran wonderful with same amount of oil usage the entire time I had owned it.It did a 100 mile commute daily and always returned 22/23 mpg.Sold car still running well.
