Two Extended Performance oil filter questions

I am looking at maintaining an OCI of anywhere from 5000 to 6500 miles, and most likely I would be using conventional oil for this. I was thinking about what filter I could use, and I remember that Fram Ultra and Mobil1 both are 15,000 mile filter that are evidently very good.

My questions:

(1) Could I use one of these filters to cover TWO oil changes--that is, when I change the oil, leave the filter in until the next time I change the oil (so the filter would get anywhere from 10K to 13K)? Or would even a filter as good as these, get all gunked up by the first 5K?

(2) Are one of these two noticeably better than the other? I have found it very hard to compare filters by looking at specs, as each filter company seems to want to make a different claim, or single pass or multiple pass, etc. So what do folks here think would be better, or is it six of one and half dozen of the other?

Sorry if these questions mark me out as a newbie. That's what I am--I'm here to learn.

Yes, you can use the oil filter for two intervals. In fact the Honda owners manual says you should do that. Either one will work fine for that.

You can use either of those for 10 to 12K in a well maintained engine. I wouldn't do so in an engine with a poor maintenance history (which might have a lot of sludge and dirt to trap).

Kind of like this ... Link

Ummm-not exactly! Any synthetic media filter has a HUGE advantage over cellulose (paper) media filters-better flow, depth filtration, tearing resistance, etc.

You are fine. I like you and here to learn stuff too.
I started skipping changing the oil filter when I got my first Fram Ultra in 2011. Made me very pleased to do it that.

I've started going 9,000 miles on the Team Ultra in my Crown Vic, I do three 3,000 mile oil changes, gonna try this and see how it goes.

One filter, one OCI!

The filters you mention are good, but overkill for 5k. For a short interval like that, just use Wix/Napa Gold, or P1 with the awesome textured grip. Carquest Red would also be a good choice.

You can go 3 OCI on an ultra..call me wasteful but I follow the OCI recommended in my manual and change both oil and filter at same time regardless of filter. I run a longer interval in winter with a good filter though. (Changing oil in winter with no garage=no thanks!) Im likely too neurotic for nothing though. Do it that way or just use a cheaper filter for each OCI. i like the idea of all new oil after a change, but thats just how i am.

1) On a well maintained engine, easily. None of the filters I have ever opened up (or cartridge on a few vehicles)on my vehicles have never been gunk'd up even after 10k intervals.

2) No but the FU's are cheaper so IMO that makes them the better filter for the $$$

A 5k- 6.5k interval is nothing. Any name brand filter will do the job. I would go with a lesser filter and change it with each 5k oil change. There's no advantage in this case leaving a filter full of dirty conventional oil behind to save changing a premium filter.

From the Fram Ultra filter website:
Ultimate dual-layer synthetic media provides up to 15,000 miles of engine protection 1.
1. Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner's manual

The key word is "UP TO" and your recommended manual's interval!

Now, lets look at M1:
Mobil 1 oil filters provide up to 15,000 miles of guaranteed protection when used with synthetic motor oil.
Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic oil is recommended for oil change intervals up to 15,000 miles or one year, whichever occurs first. However, if your vehicle manufacturer recommends an oil change interval beyond 15,000 miles and Mobil 1 Extended Performance meets the performance level specified, you can be assured that Mobil 1 Extended Performance will go the distance.

Well, you said that you were using conventional oil. And, even if 15k wasn't met, you still have to change it yearly.

My recommendation is to always change the oil and filter together. If you don't want to spend the money on the fancy filter at EVERY interval, then just use the regular filters.

I emailed someone at Fram, and he told me that the Ultra "would work just fine" for this purpose. However, I called their support and was told that Fram does not recommend using the same filter for more than one OCI. Go figure.

I just saw a a thread here of a cut Ultra--after only 5K no less--and I have to say that even though I "know" it can go 15K, I'd have a tough time putting that filter (as opposed to a clean new one) into my engine, after a 5-6K OCI. The filter itself looks clean enough after that many miles, I admit. I am just thinking that a new filter, even with lower specs, would be better for the new oil.

Fram's posted warranty extends to the OEM recommended change interval and the later of 1 year from date of purchase or date of installation.

Also,

"This warranty does not cover any Product that: a) has been subject to misuse, neglect, negligence, accident or casualty; b) has been improperly installed; c) has been installed into an engine which is not referenced as a conforming application by the then applicable FRAM® catalog; or d) has remained in service beyond the original equipment recommended change interval."

So an oil filter that has been purchased anything over a year ago has a voided warranty? Whether it has been installed or not, that 1 year timer starts ticking the day of purchase..

Also, running the filter 2x voids the warranty too assuming both OCI's add up to more than what the auto manufacturer recommends. (2) 7500 mile "manufacturer specified" OCI's on a 15k Fram Ultra for example.

Dont stash filters and keep your receipts guys!

It says 1 year from purchase date or install whichever is later.

Also, if the Fram catalog doesn't list the filter for the specific application it says it won't cover it.

Yep, that's correct - which is an interesting bit of legalese IMO.

I wonder how many Fram filters have a date of installation that precedes the date of purchase of the filter?

It could happen if a shop installed the filter and the car sat for a month (for some reason) before the owner went and paid for the oil change.
