You know, just an idea-how come we can't have TV internet? I think it already exists but it does not seem to be commonplace. TV internet would eliminate a lot of security problems (somebody going to put viruses on a TV set?) and with the TV you already have the monitor. People would pay a little extra to have channels for the various web sites such as Google, etc. You could search the internet and maybe even have some sort of email. No computer required other then some sort of relatively simple technology. If you had cable or satelite TV it would be fast, right? Instead of paying $30.00-$40.00 more a month for internet service you would pay that to your cable company for the internet channels and some sort of web email. You get tired of watching the news you just switch to the Google channel and surf the internet for a while. What do you think? Is it possible?

With Digital TV's, I look at it the other way around: why have a TV? Just plug the HDTV monitor (which is all based off computer resolution technology anyway) into the computer. Then a small monitor for small things (email, pogo games, etc) so one person can watch "TV" while the other uses the computer...all from the same device/CPU.

tv's lack the resolution for proper web surfing. i (think) most standard tv's are around 600x400?

Maybe WebTV was ahead of it's time??? With HDTV resolution reaching well above most CRTs and LCDs it might actually be readable now. I think TNS is closer to where things are going. Microsoft and Dell and other companies are trying to extend the PC into the living room. Sell more PC and OS licenses that way. A web "appliance" like WebTV might make sense for some of the older generation that want basic email and surfing. Maybe it could be re-introduced into the market.
You can make a bootable linux CD-ROM and run a hard-drive-less computer. Keep your email on hotmail or another web service.

anyone got slingbox?
I've seen a few articles lately on slingbox. I'm curious what all it does. I'm modding an xbox to create a media center. Only thing is it won't record things, just server up media. Yes, I plan to use all legally aquired media. I just want to be able to put it all on my network and view/listen whenever I want without hunting for discs.
Why would you want web TV when you can now get a real computer and monitor for $500 or less.
Same reason the Edsel failed. No buyers.
