Trying to Evaluate Ravenol VSE 0W20

I recently bought a 5L jug of Ravenol VSE 0W20 from a car owner in my nearby town. It was one of those deals whereby he sold his vehicle (don’t know what vehicle), and had no use for the unopened jug.

The good part was I only paid $30 for it. Yes $30! My understanding, is (if you can find it at all), it retails for somewhere in the $80-$90 range for 5L. Like a drug to drug addict, I couldn’t walk away from this deal.

Now, I am not completely naïve about Ravenol. I once ran their Ravenol REP Racing 5W30 in my old 2.8L ‘16 Chevrolet Colorado Diesel. I was pleased with, and had no issues with that combination. Especially considering that Italian sourced engine was one of the most finicky and unreliable diesel engines one could buy, laden with various emissions related hardware.

Now this Ravenol VSE 0W20, I know nothing about, except it has a PAO base. My vehicle of choice is my ‘22 Ford Maverick Lariat pickup. It has Ford’s 2.5L, 4 cylinder, Hybrid, Mazda based engine. Easy on oils. Crankcase oil stays relatively cool - even in July. Basically, Ford’s most “Bulletproof” engine it offers. In fact, some of the old NYC Ford Escapes with their original engine were retired somewhere in the 400,000-600,000 mile range.

To anyone with knowledge or experience of this Ravenol product: 1) How long would you extend an oil change interval, (if at all)? My recommended 0W20 OCI is around 7,500 miles. 2) Would you consider this product superior, equivalent, or a tier level below an HPL 0W20 product like their premium plus OW20 or “Overkill” Super Car Engine Oil? 3) Or is it really on par with a Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, while being a notch above Liquid Moly products? 4) Is it considered Ravenol’s flagship 0W20 oil or a mid level product?

Inquiring minds want to know. I bought first, and asked questions afterwards.

If you’re interested in extended OCI, I would do an in-service UOA where you pull a dipstick tube sample at 5k without draining and go from there to make sure the oil is still in grade.

I would start with low expectations personally and potentially be surprised, rather than say “this is Ravenol’s flagship oil and it’s going to be amazing!” That’s what I did, twice, with Ravenol DXG, which has been marketed as one of their most advanced oils ever(!) and at $90+/5L, it couldn’t even stay in grade at mere 6k mi intervals. So, start low and be pleasantly surprised.

Your engine takes 5.7 quarts, though 6 quarts brings it up to the optimum point on my ‘22 Maverick hybrid. 5L isn’t enough. What oil will you use to top it?

I have a couple of stray, orphan Mobil 3000 5W30 and Amsoil 0W20 sitting patiently in my garage.

Since I only need less than 1/2 quart technically. 5 Liters is just under 5.3 quarts. Anyway, I won’t be loosing sleep over this one - even if it swallows the entire quart.
