Amsoil, Redline.

Off the shelf- Mobil 1 0w-40. Other grades are a blend of Grp III/IV and V.

I think I'd rather have me a Group III synthetic so I don't have to worry about the remote possibility of seal incompatibility.

All Amsoil's oils are PAO (Group IV) or above, with the exception of the XL series, which are group III, and the one diesel blend which is clearly labeled as a blend. None are particularly hard on seals.

edit = change 6 to 4......

Wheres proof that M1 0w-40 is a true synthetic? What about 0w-20? I thought everyone was convinced every M1 grade had gone group III, now all of a sudden its only some grades? Is this speculation, or do we have real facts to back up this claim?

I guess this means we don't have any actual proof that Mobil 1 0w-40 is a true synthetic? Speak now, or forever hold your peace..

I think we have reached the point today where we can't say if an oil is synthetic or not. After all, there is some evidence that Mobil 1 is now Group III. And some Group III oils have performance almost comparable to or even superior to some synthetics.

Instead of worrying if an oil is synthetic or not, maybe we should consider an oils performance in UOAs as being more important. If an oil that is usually considered as being conventional is providing superior UOAs to other motor oils isn't that a more important consideration?

Pennzoil calls Pennzoil Platinum a synthetic, but apparently Pennzoil Platinum is a Group III. So what exactly is a synthetic? If conventional Pennzoil was producing UOA results almost comparable to Pennzoil Platinum, why spend more for the Pennzoil Platinum? What exactly is a synthetic oil? Does an oil have to be Group V, Group IV, Group III?

Then why not save yourself some money, and point your finger at the oil companies for price gouging, and just use a quality Group II. Since many are also comparable or superior to many Group IIIs and are cheaper?

It is getting harder to find a group IV synthetic. Up in cold country it is the oil I want. I bought a case of Valvoline synthetic 5w20 and will try it in my '00 F150 5.4L next cold season. I will see how a group III holds up.

what is the difference between series 2000 0w-30 synth amsoil and 5w-40 "european" synth oil? besides the weights.....I have noticed the mercedes only want pure sythetics.....I think that is the clue....if amg's can take it, it is 100% PAO group IV synthetic.....everything else, I think, is not???

Chevron at least in the past had a 0W30 true synthetic oil but it was not available where I live. In Alaska it probably would be a good oil in the wintertime. The other Chvron oils are apparently Group III.
