A young couple that I know, recently went on an overseas vacation to meet the guys family. While on vacation the guy go's 'all out' and purchases (at a good price through family connections in the jewelry trade) a diamond engagement ring.
On the flight home, at 30,000 feet over the pacific he proposes to his GF, and she accepts.
Upon landing in Canada they pass through customs and are asked if they have 'anything to declare' She holds out her left had to declare the engagement ring!

Thanks Pablo,
Dyslexia is something 'I' have leaned to live with. Sorry if I offend.
Maybe if 'I' had more time to send in front of my computer, I would make less (or be able to correct) typos and spelling/grammar mistakes.
Please, one 'Mori' on this site is enough! and understand that this site is also open to Less than perfect people.
Would you point your finger at someone with a physical deformity?

To answer your question, Her looks are nothing to write home about!

I wasn't pointing a finger at you. Just enjoying my BITOG time! It gets boring just finding that special "e" in Mobil.

Anyway, dude could have whipped out a spare $12.99 receipt or just claimed he bought it at home and gave it to her offshore or paid the piper honestly and been glad it was Canada, not Europe.

I seems she was insistent on doing the right thing, and have him pay the Duty and taxes due. He was unable to produce an actual receipt, and asked to discuss the matter with customs 'away' from his GF.
They were kind to him. The customs guy at one point, Rolled his eyes

i declared my wife's engagement ring when i passed through customs from overseas. I think the value was just over the limit for having to pay customs on it. had a chat with the customs bloke who had some em(sym?)pathy and told me to just walk on through - didn't charge me a cent. there are some good border people still.

How did she know it would cost just that much?

I can cite many such instances of "how can I throw money at something in my naivete to make it go away and not see anything wrong with the process regardless of clear living proof that it's a flawed conclusion that I know what I'm doing?".

How would you react?

I would have held out for a Porsche or large house.
