Thanks Ray. I don't run 10W-40 in either of my cars, but I do run the other TA grades (Just trying to help my Conoco/Phillips stock!). I was just interested as to why they used SJ instead of SL on the 10W-40. I do run their 15w40 HDEO in my Corvair. I'd do a used oil analysis (as far as I can tell, no one's done it on that oil), but it probably wouldn't be too helpful to anyone given the application it's in!

A question from a novice...While at Wal*Mart the other day, I was perusing the oils and came upon the Trop Artic. I was looking at the 10W-40 and noticed on the back it was rated SJ and SM...but not SL. Any ideas why SL isn't "covered" under SM?I never thought to look at any other 10W-40 brands to see if this was a trend. My apologies if this has been covered before!

If it's rated SJ and SM, it's covered for SL, too. The OEMs and the API eventually agreed during the discussions that preceeded actually formulating the SM oils that SM oils be backward compatible with previous "S" designations. On a side note, the TropArtic 10w30 is a Group III synthetic blend but the 10W-40 isn't. I'd be weighing the prospects of a little initial viscosity advantage versus less OCI shear-down. Not intended as advice - just something to think about.
