Triple 7 Suspected Hydraulic System Problem

ATC audio tapes

Some speculation it could have been a failing hydraulic ADP “air driven pump”. Powered by bleed air. The exhausts for them are apparently near where the sparks were coming from.

Thanks, that is similar to what I had heard. I'm interested because I did a lot of work on the 777 propulsion systems.

My theory is we had a failing bearing on that pump that caused a seal leak and subsequently, a hydraulic fluid leak.

The downloaded telemetry to the maintenance dept. apparently showed a problem resulting in the fuel dump and return to ground.

And yes the good news is, the pilots returned it safely.
