My son invites my wife and I to attend the Graduation Day at the Marine Corp boot camp in Parris Island, SC on September 11. I have been living in this country for 36 years and the southernest part that I had been was Charlotte, NC thirty years ago with my father on a business trip (I was a college kid then). I live in the Washington, DC metro area and wander how long is the drive to the boot camp. Is it possible to get there by driving in one day, the day before the Graduation Day, and stay overnight at a nearby motel? If so, are there any motels nearby and do I have to make reservation well ahead? What do I need to get through the front gate of the camp (all I got is a postcard from my son)?

Mapquest shows about 550 mi from Springfield, VA to Beaufort. For me that's a one day drive.

I would make hotel reservations soonest. Recruitparents shows the available hotels/motels around Parris Island. I would recommend going for all three days. If you haven't been familiar with the military, this is a good chance to start the learning process.

Congratulations to your son for graduating and best of luck to him in his future assignments.

Thank you and your son. I have had the honor of participating in two pass and review ceremonies. It is something you will not likely forget and I know your son will remember throughout his life.

I recommend arriving early and staying as long as possible.

To me the real hero are the ones in uniform serving our country. Thank you and thank to your son for serving our country.

Have a safe trip to Parris Island to celebrate your son graduation.

I spent 7 years down there. I sure miss it. Motels fill up fast so make your reservation as soon as you can. If they are filled up the Best Western at Point South/Yemassee usually has rooms.

THIS^^^

I've only had the honor of seeing the pass and review ceremony once, for my youngest son, 3 years ago.

He, nor I will EVER forget it!

You will get more info to give to the MPs at the gate of the base.

After the ceremony, plan a good chunk of time waiting for the parking lot to empty out, as this could put you PAST the checkout time at your motel (you can request a late checkout, as the desk people know how late you get out of there).

And YES, a big THANK YOU to you and your son!

BTW; I made the trip from almost 4 hours north of you in one day, so it should be a piece of cake for you from your location.
It DOES seem like it takes forever to get to that part of S.C. though, since it is almost in Georgia.
