Trimmer set way too lean from the factory?

I was good enough to lend my post hole digger to a friend, along with a full gallon of mixed fuel. His plan was to fence in his acre property nearby in FL. (all sand, so the holes are easy)

Not sure what he did to screw it up, but it runs terribly and rattles like mad now. Despite giving him plenty of mixed fuel, I suspect he somehow managed to put regular gas in it. I don't have much of a use for the thing now, so it really does not matter.

It's called stratocharging. There is a second seperate throttle valve feeding air only into the transfer ports ahead of the air/fuel mix from the crankcase. The idea is to scavenge the exhaust with air only, not air/fuel mix significantly reducing hydrocarbon emissions. Done correctly it seems to work well.
Air?
Well air lubricates about as well as coffee faxes and coffee don't fax worth a dmn.

A gallon isn't that much for an acre of land. He probably used straight gas when he ran out
