Trick to paint pens?

Hello All,

I purchased a paint pen for our 2013 KIA Forte a while back. The car is called "Gun Metal Gray" but for the life of me, I cant get the paint pen to make any rock chips look decent, and rock chips on the hood area are definitely starting to accumulate as the car is driven 90% on the interstate.

Any tips or tricks on how to get the paint to look good with one of these things? It is the paint repair pen directly from the dealer. Paint on one side, clear coat on the other.

A paint pen will never provide a perfect job, but best results are when you prepare the surface and take your time. You need to clean the hole. If the primer is not present, fill the hole with primer. Make sure you use enough color to fill the hole in level or almost level. On smaller holes, consider applying paint, and primer with a toothpick or the end of a paper match. Put the paint on one tiny drop at a time and don't go over the boundary.

If you have a blot, wipe it off with alcohol wipe and start again.

You can use the brush to apply clear coat and try to have as little as possible on the brush. You want to paint on a level, even, super-thin coat, and you can overlap the good paint a little bit.

Metallic Grey is a forgiving color for this kind of repair.

If the damage is really extensive, sometimes the right thing to do is go to a body shop for a refinish.

Use a very, very fine bristled paint brush. Check out Ammo NYC's Youtube video on this. He had two. One that involved a lurid graffiti on a hood and another on the side of a nice Merc SUV.

EVEN with his expert skills... it still wasn't perfect unless you sand and level it down.

Had great luck globbing the touch up paint on a coffee can lid, touch wood toothpick into the paint, then touch the chip and slowly let the paint fill in the chip. Prep the the surface first with some rubbing alcohol if it's only down the primer. If rust has started then a little more surface prep will be needed.

I am able to pick these up locally at Hobby Lobby.

They have several different sizes.

VW's soft paint. Every time I do a long drive, I get tons of pinhole chips on the hood and side fenders.

Because it fills in the chips without looking like [censored]. The paint is in the chip and not on the paint around it. Super easy to use also.

Sorry, not trying to be rude or dense here, but I have to keep asking...

So is drcolorchip doing something different to their paint to make it easier to apply? Are the applicators somehow better than touch up paints from other vendors?
