the install instruction for block heater (Acura TSX) says drain coolant first from rad and drain plug (on engine jacket) and then install the block heater on drain plug hole. trying to cut it short, and save some coolant, can i just open the rad cap to release pressure and remove the drain plug and quickly install the block heater, instead of draining? or if there is any other trick i would like to learn!! thanks!!

Methinks they're trying to save you from taking a bath in coolant by draining the system first. Of course if you don't mind a nice ethylene glycol shower, you could try it your way, but that stuff is poisonous and not good for the environment. If you don't want to buy new coolant, capture it into a clean container, then pour it back in when you're done. The radiator drain is connected to a tube, where the fluid comes out. That should make it easy to catch it in a milk jug or washer fluid bottle or some other clean container for reuse.

i see!! my drain bolt area is oily but i think i will use a plastic bad to capture the coolant and dump it. i can acces the drain plug from the top so probably avoid a shower!! if i put the cap back will it slow the spill of the coolant somehow? thanks.

You're going to have to drain the whole system either way, Honda's use the block drain as the port for the heater. Unthreading the plug isn't easy either, I had to use a breaker bar & my legs to break the seal. Use a threadsealant on the heater when you install it, something like Loctite PST.

oh no.... the bolt is on top of oil filter, there is limit space. i wish mine wil be easier to remove since there ns't much space.... when did you install on yours? thx

The drain on my Prelude (H22A) is below the filter, just above the pan. The heater should be low on the block so the heat can rise into the engine.

thanks, i checked, the TSX's bolt is on top. look like i will have to recycle the coolant. what shall i watch our for recycle coolant? i let local car shop install a block heater for me on my last accord and water pump went out after 30,000km. trying to do it with myself but can't help trying to cut corner!!
