I have an old Milton one that was my dad's. It has to be over 60 years old and works great. I use it every year when I swap or rotate the tires.

Buy a tire tread depth gauge? I tried once, but the service tech at Discount Tire would have none of it. He gave me one.

From what other's have described here, it looks like mine is also a Milton. But mine is marked in green, yellow, and red zones. It couldn't be any easier to use, and to read the results. I don't know why anyone would need anything more.

Local America's Tire(same company with DT) service techs use similar tire gauge, the color indicator looks very efficient. Next time when I'll be there for rotation I will ask for one.

I had to return this because it was just too big and heavy. You do not want to drop this on your foot or anything because the metal can be sharp and heavy. Instead I ordered the one made by Dill which is more plastic but much lighter and a bit smaller as well. I see people at the local Costco carrying the Dill model around and I can understand why....much more pocketable.

Sounds like what I have. I forget if I bought at Walmart or Amazon. Slime model. Which reminds me, I should go find it. Wouldn't hurt to start measuring at each rotation and writing it down.

The Milton is fine, but I also have a Longacre 50560 analog dial type depth gauge, as well as a Dill 5800 digital gauge (from Tire Rack).

The Longacre 50553 dial type durometer also comes in handy to see which tires really are 'stickier', despite marked tread wear ratings.

I don't know how it never dawned on me to use the other end of my digital caliper to measure tread depth.

I don't know how it never dawned on me to use the other end of my digital caliper to measure tread depth.

Except that calipers are generally too long to fit under the fenders. Sometimes there isn't enough room to fit one of those small ones.
