Tread cracking

Hello all,

Need BITOGers opinion on how these tires look. They are DOT date coded 2017. Goodyear Assurance All Season 205/65R16 with ~50k miles on them.

Debating running them for the summer but there is some decent weather checking in the treads, especially parallel with the tire tread in the grooves. Here in the south, the highways are filled with blown tire bits when summer heat is in full force - so just want to make sure these look safe to continue running.

The main picture that concerns me is photo #3 where there looks to be a cut in the tread which is on my passenger front tire. Thanks!

Well, I am sure that you will get all kinds of opinions, but if it were me I wouldn't have even seen those "cracks". I suppose it is different in the south, although I didn't think NC is that far south, but here in Nebraska I wouldn't think twice about tires like that. Of course I do very little interstate driving at 80 mph. Just my opinion, but then I have had more tires go flat while driving with new tires than old.

You do know that if a tire ( especially a front tire ) blows out, that your brake pedal imminently becomes your "if you use me you will totally loose control pedal".

I don't see anything that would concern me. Picture 3 doesn't give a good indication of how bad a cut that is but as long as it's not down to the belts I wouldn't worry about it. If it concerns you putting it on the passenger rear would probably be safe even if it did happen to blow out. I've got a set of tires on one of my cars that sits in the garage 95%+ or more of the time that's 10-12 years old and only has about 13K miles on them. I wouldn't hesitate to start across the US on them on the hottest day of the year. Several years ago I ran a spare on an old truck I used to have that had been stored under the truck in the spare rack for about 20 years. Never had a bit of problem with the tire. Back when I used an old '88 Escort as a daily driver to work/back on construction sites after the car got 300-350K miles on it I'd buy most of my tires out of a junkyard for it. Only problem I remember having doing so was I had one tire where the thread separated from the belts but the tire didn't blow out. I went and got a couple more used tires and replaced both tires on that axle. I probably ran used tires on it for 200K miles or more with only that one issue that I can recall.

I wouldn't worry about the cracking, but they're worn close enough to the wear bars that I would have already replaced them.
My feeling on wear bars is that they are just a reminder that the tires are getting low on tread, and it may be time to start thinking about getting tires someday. Of course for me tires like that would go another 2 or 3 years before they even got down to the bars, as I drive so little.

I don't see anything too concerning based on the pictures. Those tires have a little life left in them. Nice avatar by the way!

I'd be more concerned with the wear bars beginning to be prominent and the risk of hydroplaning during a summer storm like we get way down south here in NC.:)
