Transmission Fluid and Transmission Flush?

I only know what my experience has been. I flush & filter change every vehicle at about 80% of the recommended interval. I usually also replace some fluid with an extractor along the way. I have never had a transmission fail when serviced like this from new. So to me it's cheap insurance since a flush/filter service is <$200 and a new trans is $2-3000.

The whole "power" flush thing is misunderstood. If your tranny is mechanically sound and has rountine maintance the machine will not hurt a thing. Also I have to add that you have to have an qualified tech working the machine.

So true!

The flush machine at a nearby quickie lube is off in the corner with dust on it along with some old rags and some empty cardboard boxes. I asked the guy how many tranny flushes they do and he said about two or three every day.

Mechanical hygiene is an odd expression but I think you know what I mean. You have seen the kind of shop that should have a warning, tetanus shot required before entering. I think that before you allow any shop to work on your car that you should be sure it's a clean place for the mechanics to work. A mechanic that will work in a dirty unorganized shop may not be the right mechanic to work on your car.

For most daily drivers a tranny flush is not necessary if you do periodic drain and refills. And again, part of the risk is lack of skill on the part of the person doing the work.

I have a 1076 Dodge 3/4 ton van with the A727 transmission, oversized cooler and transmission deep pan. I change it every 5oK and have 368,000 miles on the vehicle with NO failures. I run the van heavily loaded on long mountain trips and pull a trailer. I have never had a transmission fail and have run most of them over 250,000 miles with this maintenance and proper cooling. Hogwash that they won't last, people just don't take care of them. All my cars have gone over 250,000 miles and never have had an engine or transmission failure. Now if I could just do something about drivers who hit me then I would keep all my cars until they rust out.
