I too find dealers are often ignorant about lubricants and warranties.

Absolutely. My local Toyota dealer wouldn't do a TSB for the weak rear suspension. Instead, they tried to sell me aftermarket air bags for something like $2,000. A letter to Toyota and a request for the regional warranty rep to call me took care of it. The dealership called me the following week to schedule the work.

I would be more specific.

The use of Amsoil (a fluid that is not Toyota Licensed for WS) will shift the burden of proof from the OEM to the user's choice, herein the Amsoil.

Now, I am not picking on Amsoil here. They have great products. Those products, when used as directed by Amsoil, have a very solid warranty, too.

But I do take exception to your statement.

It's not that I don't believe Amsoil wouldn't stand behind their product; I am sure they would. But the situation would have to be specifically analyzed (hence the very detailed requirements in Amsoil's written warranty).

The M/M act is so very much misunderstood by most folks. When you use licensed products, the burden of proof is upon the OEM. If you use some other choice, the burden of proof shifts to the user. Or in this case, the warranty of the sub-provider (Amsoil). If there were a failure, it would be between Toyota and Amsoil to come to some agreement on failure mode and resolution of claim.

Again - I trust Amsoil completely that their recommendations are sound and products capable.

But while I agree that Toyota cannot blindly void the warranty due to the use of Amsoil, they can shift the burden of proof from them to Amsoil. That is a challenge I suspect Amsoil would be capable of rising to and succeeding.
