trans fluid for 2003 ford excursion

i am getting ready to do a fluid and filter change on my 2003 ford excursion with the V10/4R100 combo. i am looking to use a synthetic ATF. the manual calls for mercon transmission fluid. any suggestions ??

Does that trans have a filler/dipstick tube but no drain plug? Thats what my brothers 2003 F150 V6 has and Im dissappointed.

I don't understand. Isn't it normal for American vehicles to have a filler/dipstick and no drain plug? The disappointment has already been implied on this site many times.

The 4R100 has a drain plug in the trans pan up to and including the 2001 year. I am not sure after that year, but I think they do. The 2003 may not have a torque converter drain though, again I have to look at one.

Your transmission calls for Mercon/DexronIII. Some of the products that fit that exact requirement are Mobil I, and Royal Purple for Synthetics. You can use Motorcraft ATF, but have deep pockets. To maintain your warranty you must only use a Mercon/Dexron III, not a multi-rated fluid.

If you choose to use a multi-rated fluid, Amsoil full synthetic, and Schaeffers semi-syn are both my top choices. (The new Schaeffer's fluid is multi-rated).

Id say use Amsoil too. Im probably gonna get some for my GM transmission. And maybe my Tundra too when its out of warranty and I can stop using Toyota T-IV ATF.

The Toyota T-IV ATF is the same as the JWS 3309, GM 9986195, Volvo 1161540, and Audi G-055-025-AZ
specifications. It’s for Aisin-Warner slip-controlled lock-up automatic transmissions used in some but not all Toyota, Lexus, Audi, Saturn, Ford, Volvo, Volkswagen, Saab, Porsche and Mitsubishi.

It’s not interchangeable with the Mercon, Dexron,
Chrysler, or other specifications directly. As usual there is very little information available on just how this fluid differs from those other specifications.

I’ve been unable to find a non-dealer source for it at retail, although Sunoco Japan lists one and Mobil ATF 3309 is on the ExxonMobil website but apparently not yet in distribution.

I would stay with the Toyota Type T-IV. As far as I know, there are no substitutes, although many claim to be. T-IV is a highly friction modified fluid. The bosses' RAV4 uses it and as much as I would like to go to synthetic, I am not yet satisfied that there is a substitute.
