I bought a 1996 GSR last month. I was orginally planning to drive this car for 1-2 years and then get another car but now I've decided to keep it and maybe get a new motor or rebuild the engine in a couple of years.

So right now I'm having some transmission problems. I think it is with the synchros. When I'm downshifting from 5th to 4th it is ok, but when I downshift to 3rd it won't go in. It would only go in if I rev it up and match it myself. I took it to one mechanic and he said that my synchromesh is worn out and I need a transmission overhaul or replace the tranny with a used one. I need a 2nd opinion on it, what do you guys think it is?

I was thinking of just leaving the tranny now until the motor die as well and then get a new tranny with my new motor or rebuild motor in 2 years so I want to check if this tranny problems can lead to other problems like with the motor or is it just going to be like this because I think I can hold out until I rebuild the motor.

I've got a 2006 Honda Civic Si that never shifted perfectly when new. I took it into the Honda dealer and the mechanic felt it needed new synchros after a test drive. I read other owners had solved the problem by switching to Amsoil MTF so I tried it even though the mechanic nearly refused to try it. I insisted, he installed it and test drove. He came back and reported in now shifted better than any other Civic Si he had ever driven.

Maybe all you need is a better/fresher transmission fluid?

yeah I heard that something about GM synchromesh or any redline MTF. I'm not sure how to do this one my car though...can someone link me to a guide or should I take it to a mechanic to replace the transmission fluid

Remove the drain plug, let the fluid drain out, and fill until fluid runs out the fill plug. At least that's the way most manual transmissions are.

Double check the clutch/pedal adjustment.Try some of the mtf Tim suggested .Low $$$ if it helps. Do what Tosh recommended.

What's wrong with the motor? B18C right? Considering it hasn't been swapped already... those things are pretty tough unless you beat on 'em or shift incorrectly or break a timing belt to mess up the valves. As for the transmission fluid, send me a PM and i'll give you a detailed guide on changing the MTF in the Acura Integra.

I cant seem to find the FM in my area. I'm in canada and they say that part number is a US part number. Called like 7 dealership and they all said they never heard of it or don't carry it.
