Hey guys, I have a problem, well i posted in the last topic that i went through run-rite treatment, drain/refills X9, and ARX treatment and LC treatment all in a 3 years span since i bought the car new in sept '02. Now After i did the last drain/refill, the fluid would get dark within 500 miles, and the fluid always smells burnt. From 1st-2nd, i get a bad bang or strong rev sound after it shifts out of first , every other shifts smooth. What do you think is the cause of this?

I just received the SF-ATF-Z1 fluid, maybe ill do another flush and add the SF in since it got great reviews here.
The problems with Honda Auto transmissions are heat and metal shaving build-up, so i got the magnefine inline filter and the b&m transmission cooler with fan to combat the heat problem and to capture the shavings that the internal metal screen didnt.

Give me some insight, im in serious concern
Its a 02 Accord dx auto with 60500k miles on it.

Hmmmmm, haven't heard of that many problems with the 02 Accord AT's. I change my fluid out at every OCI and it does look surprizedly burnt for that many of low miles. Is the indash indicator lights blinking like on D3 or D?

No sir, thats what I hope never happens, before i performed the drain/refill x3 procedure, the fluid was dirty but it moved pretty good, then after the change, when shifting from first to second, its lazy then the shift either gives me a bang that you can feel a big jerk on the car, like if somethings was pulling hard on you,. Then from second to third and so on, you can hardly feel the shifting. So my gut feeling tells me either the 1stto 2nd gear is bad, ormaybe the fluid isnt 96%-100% new fluid or maybe a bearing is on its way to ****.

You may have had an extremely dirty transmission due to long OCI's and highly oxidized fluid.

Add the SF-Z1 and observe when the fluid turns dark.

Any leaks from the axle seals yet. Sounds like what happened to mine at 112K. Be on the lookout for P17xx codes if I remember correctly.

Even though the '02s weren't part of the 100K mile warranty extension ('00 and '01 only), you might get some assistance from Honda on this matter. Hope you kept documentation of at least one of your fluid drain/refills and it would probably be best not to mention ARX and LC adds when and if it becomes necessary to contact Honda customer service 800 number.

I've read where they have assisted '98,'99 and '02s on a case by case basis. And it never hurts to show a few purchases of their Z1 along the way. It's their game, learn to play it.

Mike, when i bought the car in '02, my dad took off the extended warranty that we bought $3300 and we got about $1300 of that refund back. Would it matter anyway, would Honda go out of their way to check to see if I have it? If Honda had extended earranties for some 02 Accord, especially v6s, shouldnt they change my transmission anyway because of that.

Mola, I have changed the fluid on time before the stated change interval. my very first flush, started at 23k, then every change after that were no more than 12k miles. it went ARX,LC and run-rite treatments, how can it be possible that the transmission is still dirty? I recently just added a maintenance does of Arx

No leaks from the axle yet, i had to change theinner shaft because of an accident that i had on drivers side that push the wheel slanted and bent the control arm, bust the ball joint, radius rod, knuckle, and the inner shaft

You mean the 4-spd AT?

4-spd AT is OKAY, but reliability is less than stellar. There are failures (here and there) but no where as many as the 5-spd Autos.

Thats very true about the stories i hear from the 5-spped autos by Honda. But if give my maintenance record some serious scrutiny, it willclear show that my transmission was properly maintained. The only possible reason for the symptom now is that from the time i bought the car new, i would rev so hard and so much, 30% i would push the car 90- up, the 70% its either 65-70 or regualr city driving which was around 20-40. But if disect the miles that i have on the vechile, 75% of the miles are highway and 25% city miles in which imcludes a lot of stop and go

Less than stellar is high praise for this autotrans. I've followed this problematic autotrans for years on multiple Accord forums. The v6 and I-4s of the 6th Gen model years were both 4spd autos and both have problems with longevity. I made it to 112K by draining/filling at 10K-15k intervals with ATF-Z1 and with 95% interstate usage, cruising at 70mph with the cruise control set, on mostly flat terrain. Averaged 300-350 miles/day for most of 1.5 years. There simply aren't any easier miles.

Bluj40... the extended warranty I spoke of was not a purchased Honda Care extended warranty. It was a letter and policy by Honda sent to 2000/2001 owners of Accords, Preludes and Odys extending the warranty of the transmissions from the standard 36K to 100K miles because of the known failure rate. The other model years were not explicitly included, but if need be, it wouldn't hurt to try for some customer assistance. Honda knows these problems spanned the whole Generation.

Anyway,

Since my case sounds like acertain gear or maybe the torque conerter is going south,so the only good approach would be to perform an overhaul on certain parts of the transmission instead of replacing the whole unit.

so Mike, i too received that noticed about two or three months after the purchase of my vehicle. So what was the deal with the Honda Care extended warranty? So i shouldnt hesistate going to the dealer and hopefully they will replace my transmission without any back talk.

Like what Mike said, the warranties were only extended on the V6 Honda/Acura models that had the oil jet kit installed. The cut-off for this warranty was 2003, but some early build 2004 models were affected by this problem. AFAIK, the warranty ONLY covered the V6 models, NOT the 4-cyls.

Without a doubt, the 4-cyl autos do have problems with longevity. But if anything fails, you're pretty much SOL.

fwiw, Market525 did have a 4-spd AT fail on his daughter's 00 Accord 4-cyl. Surprisingly, it was replaced at no change by the local dealer w/a remanufactured unit. AFAIK though, no 4-cyls were covered, so it may've been replaced on a goodwill gesture.

I'd save about $3000 to have a rebuilt (independent) unit installed.

****, i knew I am in trouble, thats what im worrying about, if the transmission fail on me,im done. Thats why I took good care of it the way that i did.

Michael Wan... the I4 and v6 Accord transmissions both had there transmission warranties extended for the 2000/2001 model years and the other model years for the 6th Gen were handled on a case by case basis. Both 4 and 6 cyl models have been "customer assistanced".

The oil jet you are referring to is for the 5spd auto used in the Accord line starting in 2003 (7th Gen) and in the Acura line earlier.

Bluj40...I didn't realize that Honda was sending the letters to '02 owners also. If indeed you still have that letter, I definitely would go to your dealer. The extended warranty covered parts and labor. The only concern would be if the dealer knows of your front end repair and tries to play that card. Regardless, I'd still try the dealer first before spending 2K-3K on a repair.

If it's shifting as badly as you said, it will eventually throw a code. When it does, go visit your friendly Honda dealer with your letter in hand. Good luck.

You did not have an extended warranty. I know, we all call them that, but they are really a service contract. Being a contract, they cover exactly what the contact says they cover...if the owner performs the maintenance and retains the paperwork exactly as the contract requires.

A real extended warranty is issued by the car maker, not sold by the high pressure finance & insurance sleaze-ball in the stealership.

Mike, ****, i dont know where i put that letter, that was almost 4years ago. How can I convince Honda without showing them that letter, they are aware of the problem.

So when you do a drain/refill x3 and after driving for some xx miles, and when you smell the dipstick, its smells burnt, what would be an indication of that? I just added a 3 oz maintenance dose of ARX to the transmission, now the transmission fluid is real brown and its shifting a little rough

Bluj40...Visit Honda's ownerlink site, register and your VIN will be compared to Honda's database for issues. Or, call the Customer service corp number in your owners manual and explain your problems to them. Visit multiple Accord forums to learn from others how to play their game, unless $$$ don't matter to you. If you don't feel comfortable speaking to Honda or a dealer, possibly your dad could assist you.

Wow, this is the most posting I've done in 4 years at this site. Going back into lurker (hunter, gatherer) mode.

Im way ahead of you Mike, i did that 3 years ago, no issues showing up. One thing a local dealer in new yourk did to me that i bought the supposedly new car from them ('02 at that), when i looked at the marking at the engine, it states its f2345, which i knew, but it is 2001 engine, second hint i caught, that i received a new 2001 manual instead of a 2002, same car but if i bought 02 car, i should get an 02 manual. So my conclusion would be, Honda couldnt sell that last '01, so they marked it upas a '02 and sold it to me, thinking i wont notice. Now the bad syndrome has befallen me but it wouldnt serve me right because the honda dealer sold it as an '02 on the VIN number and the '02 accords dont really have transmission problems
