There are two hoses that come out of the transmission that go to the radiator/transmission cooler. Is it possible to have 1 hose drain the old while the other sucks in the new? Or do I have to drain it from one hose while I add transmission fluid thru the dipstick hole?

works with some cars...best to just dump in new while draining old with car running ..or drain 1-2 quarts ..shut off fill up ..and drain again ..repeat until clean fluid is running out the line
Usually the oil from the cooler returns into the pan. Do as Deepsquat recommended.
OK sounds good, how will i know which hose to remove from the radiator? If im not mistaken one hose takes the fluid from the transmission to the cooler and one hose takes it from the cooler and back to the transmission.
Unless you know, pull off both, extend them into a drain pan with clear tubing, start engine, add new ATF via dipstick while someone watches the clear tubing for old fluid to change to a bright red.
Mark which hose was the drain for next time.

The return line is not suction, it needs pressure to push new fluid into the pan.

How many quarts of fluid do you think I should buy, I think the whole transmission has about 9 quarts in it.
The Amsoil web site lists this type of info. I guessed at a 2004 Avalon and they list 9.3 QT for total fill and 5.0 QT for initial fill. I assume initial fill is what the pan holds.
So if your going to do a backyard flush (which is what Amsoil suggests by the way) then I would have a few extra QTs of ATF as there is some mixing in the pan when the engine is running and you are pouring ATF into the dipstick tube. I'd have 12 QTs on hand and stop at 11 or when fluid changes color as it drains. Reconnect everything, bring transmission up to temp, shift into all gears, and re-check fluid. Use your last QT to add ATF if needed.
You might want to use some low pressure air to blow out old ATF in cooler while you are at it.

nice thats wha i was thinking...I guess I will buy a case, comes with 12 bottles. I'm gonna be using shell ATF most likely, its 12.99 for 12 quarts, can't go wrong with that unless there's another brad u can recommend thats not too expensive. By the way its a 97 Avalon
I flushed my 97 Avalon about 2 months ago. The line from the trans going to the passenger side is carrying ATF from the trans to the cooler. The line on the driver's side is carrying ATF from the cooler to the trans. It's a simple matter to disconnect the hose from the cooler on the driver's side and attach tubing.
Good advice from the other members. It took 11 quarts for me to do the flush. You won't see much flow out of the trans until it warms up.
I used Valvoline Dex VI. I think it was a good idea to do it (150K on the car), but I can tell absolutely no difference in the performance of the car or the gas mileage.

THANKS! now I know which hose to pull. What size tubing did you use to connect to the hose coming from the trans?
I used a 3/8" (inside diameter) which was a little too small--I had to jam a handle from a set of pliers into the end of it to get it to fit, so if I had to do it again I would use 1/2".
OK thanks, so I just hook the 1/2 in tube up to the cooler on the drivers side..sound good!
