If you look close, the lead locomotive appears to pitch up...some big forces at play there.

Railroads like the existing paradigm that it's impossible for the train to stop. They will not take measures to avoid such incidents. There could be an emergency button at the crossing to push if your car is stuck on the tracks, that would turn signals red.The railroad was downright hostile to people looking and taking pictures.
