Looking over my new to me f150 I check the stock 4-pin trailer harness.

The unshielded male pin on the end had +12v related to frame ground.

The 3 shielded female pins have switched ground relative to that +12v, and whether left/right brake and running lights are on.

Is this completely backwards? The harness comes out of a factory looking tee.

I'm naturally concerned that the average trailer, if its lights are not isolated from the frame, will short something out.
 
I don't know exactly what's going on... but you're right in that this isn't standard trailer wiring. On all the vehicle-side 4-pin flat connectors that I've dealt with, the exposed male terminal is ground, and the three insulated female terminals are power for the tail light, left turn signal, and right turn signal. Don't remember the order, but the wire colors are brown, yellow, and green, respectively. So, yeah... sounds like yours is exactly the reverse polarity of a standard connector.

No offense- but I just have to ask: Are your multimeter leads plugged in backwards?
 
Even if the multimeter leads were backwards there still would not be 12v between the male pin and the chassis of the F150. Some wires are crossed on the truck. The colour coding that Onion mentions is correct and is also the colour coding that GM uses on their vehicles.

just connecting the truck's harness to a properly wired trailer harness will short, cause the +12v on your ground pin (white wire) will go to the trailer frame which is connected to your truck's frame via the ball hitch.

try tracing backwards from the 4-pin plug on the truck and see how and where it connects to the truck wiring.
what someone might have done is spliced the 4-pin connector which is aftermarket and might have thought white wire is hot wire and figured ground should be black. The oem trailer wiring for fords are usually big round 6,7, or 8 pinners.
 
and, if you do have a 4-pin harness hacked into the wiring
you should be able to find trailer wiring kits at walmart and the like. I bought one for a 1993 f250, was a standard 4-pin harness vehicle side and had an oem connector that connected inline to the oem wiring just inside the bumper. Real easy, no brainer, was like $10.

That's just the whatsis that's already in place!

As I was prodding around with my DVOM I was getting "minus volts" so I was expecting what I was not getting... and my leads were correct.

What's really baffling is why I have a constant +12V source back there. I should check my brake light sockets for proper polarity too I guess.

Or I could short that pin to ground and see which fuse blows.

Ground faults can give some really screwy readings. If that picture is an actual picture of your truck, the level of rust on the frame rail may be a partial indication of the problem.

Many electrical components may be "grounded" to whatever metal "frame" or "body" piece is handy. As a combination of factors build up over time (corrosion, friction wear, etc) the various components of the vehicle (Cab, frame, bed) may become electrically insulated from each other. As resistance to ground builds up these odd things may occur.

It's very possible that the ground at that point in the wiring harness doesn't go all the way back to the negative terminal on the battery. It may be attached somewhere nearby to the frame or body (bed). If that ground circuit has any corrosion at all in it, it may have a resistance value greater than zero (dead short).

Let's say the lights are on (brake lights, running lights, whatever) and they are grounded to the truck bed. The truck bed is bolted to the frame and the frame is bolted to the cab and the battery is bolted (grounded) to the cab & engine. Any creeping corrosion at any of those connection points can increase the resistance at each point.

The metal mass of the bed and or frame could likely provide enough of a ground mass to light the lights even if the circuit back to the negative terminal of the battery was "less than perfect". Maybe the lights wouldn't be as bright as when the truck was new, or maybe the flashers wouldn't flash as fast, but it may be hard to detect.

The way you would see it is by taking a reading from "ground" on the + voltage side of whatever defect was in the circuit to a "better ground" on the other side of the defect. A voltmeter is designed to avoid putting any loads on the circuit being tested, so what you could see is a positive voltage reading on a "ground point" that has a rusty connection between it and the negative terminal of the battery.

Finding the bad connection is the tricky part.

If you are reading +12 vdc on the ground pin of the 4 pin connector, then whatever that pin is grounded to has some resistance between it and the negative terminal of the battery. I will *assume* you are finding ground (with your voltmeter) somewhere close by, probably the frame (trailer hitch bolt etc). The wiring harness is probably grounded (along with tail lights and other accessories) to the truck bed/body. That's a place to start.

Take a stout piece of heavy wire and make yourself a new ground strap between the bed and the frame. Both connection points will have to be cleaned down to bare metal (you can touch up with Rustoleum later). See if that fixes it, if not, make another ground strap for each connection back to the battery negative post.

Eventually you will find the fault.

NOTE: If the voltage is negative (-12 vdc) on the white wire in the harness, it's another problem.
 
It's a 95 and there were uglier ones that I looked at before this one. That "frame" is part of the spare tire carrier or something else non-structural.

When I bought the thing gas was 50 cents cheaper than it is now, I should have waited for the nicer ones to come out of the woodwork.

The location tells the tale. There's a bunch of salt that truck has rolled over in the last 11 winters.

One other note. There's a reasonable chance that if you just plugged it up and used it you wouldn't even notice a problem. If it's just a weakish ground between the bed and the frame, the connection at the trailer hitch ball would likely make up the ground through the trailer frame.

Of course, if that pin sparks when you touch it to the frame...
