Just bought a five-gallon pail of Traveller Universal Tractor Transmission/Hydraulic fluid at Tractor Supply. Do we know who is the manufacturer (Warren)? Label on pail says it complies with JD Hy-Gard (JDM J20-C) spec. My 22-year-old JD 655 tractor (with loader) specs JDM-J20-B low viscosity. Don't know much about oils, except to be aware that it is a very sensitive issue, especially in the context of hydrostatic transmissions and "mixed" usage (trans and hydraulics). Am I OK with the Tractor Supply product for the JD 655? Seemed like a good value at $30. Thanks.

the deere low vis spec is jdm j20d, the j20c hygard spec is for hygard (9.4 cst@100c) low vis is 7.2 cst@100c.

the spec on your tractor is for low vis, j20-b is thwe old hydrostatic oil spec, replaced with low vis, j20d

Made by different companies. Used to be made by Warren, then by Citgo, then by Mid-States.

As Johhny said, get an MSDS and see who is listed as blender or manf.

I was wondering the same thing,i need some for my ford 4500 and i see it had my spec 134D,good price like you said $30.

I thought the TSC THF was "good enough" until I subjected it to oil analysis and found it rather lackluster in ingredients. If you look in the Gear & Transmission Used/Virgin Oil Analysis section you can find that analysis and several other discussions I had over the past few years. You will see that I turned 180 in my opinion on it. I suggest you find and read those posts (there is a lot of expert commentary there from some of the BITOG brain trust).

I have an older tractor than yours and using the TSC for several years didn't kill it, but the difference in cost is somewhat telling in the ingredients, compared to the Hytran. I looked a little harder and found one of my local

Case IH dealers had Hytran in bulk (I supply the container) at just a $1.50/gal more than TSC was selling the THF. I'm a tightwad and I like to do more with less, but upon reconsideration, there is enough difference in the oils to warrant paying a slightly higher price. I got some useful advice from several pros here that if I were to use the TSC oil, I should shorten the OCI by a sizable percentage. Take that to heart if you go ahead with it. Commonly, the JD HyGard oil is very highly regarded as being a superior oil.

Anyway, a FWIW from someone who has walked your path.

PS- You can most easily find the post by clicking on my name at the left and click "View posts" I think you will find the last of the THF posts in late '08 or early '09, but some go back to '06.

Thank you jim,,like i said i too need around 15 gals to do a oil change on my tractors hyd,the TSC is a good price but makes me think it's skimping on the AW and other attives as well,i know the JD hygaured is a good oil also like you said.

thanks for your post!!!

This is all very useful information. Thanks to all you oil gurus. The moral of the story, for the average layman, is "you get what you pay for". I am always looking for a good value, but would trade a higher price for piece of mind any day of the week and twice on Sunday. If memory serves me right, the JD 655 only takes 4.5 gallons anyway. So what if I pay $35 for a pail of Hy-Gard oil and another $20 for the "John Deere" name on the label? Better than looking at the inside of my hydrostatic trans - no thank you, I just drive 'em, I don't fix 'em.

here's the thread jim was talking about, looka at the weak additive package in that Traveller!!

hardly no zinc and low phos. what keeps pumps from wearing out?

We've come a long way from my old track loader - I think the pails simply read "hydraulic oil - 10w" - and the brand never seemed to matter very much. Same as my old Dodge 4x4 - the trans and rear end don't seem to have any prejudice as to the gear oil brand (yes, Jim, four-wheelin' is alive and well).
