Is the T-IV fluid, backwards compatible? I have a 99 camry which specs Dexron III, but in 2000 they changed the spec to the T-IV stuff. Why did they change the spec? Are the transmissions still the same?

I think that they are different transmissions--at least that's the case in the Tundra where the 2000-2002 use DexIII and the 2003 with a different transmission uses T-IV.
Dexron has big advantages...easy to find, good price, synthetic choices.

I can't comment specifically on Toyota but in the Honda range, their friction modified ATFZ1 is compatible with the older transmissions that call for Dex11. Smoother shifts and elimination of shudder for most folks. It looks like the older the transmission, the more benefits accrued.
Ken2 my Mom has a 2003 Tundra and it spec.'s Dex III for the ATF. Positive it is an 03 I checked the last 8 of the vin.
JB, check and re-check again. 03 tundras are toyota t-iv atf. the transmission dipstick will also have etched on it type t-iv atf.

Did early '03s have the transmission using DexIII and later '03s use the different transmission that needs T-IV? All I know for sure is that most '03s need T-IV.

Does anyone make a synthetic T-IV transmission fluid? I had heard that Amsoil makes a compatible fluid, but their catalog that I just received doesn't list T-IV as one of the types that is compatible with their fluid. Surely someone else makes a synthetic T-IV.
Mark just recently Amsoil finished testing for T-IV. It must have been some interesting tests, because it seemed to be more than the usual bragging when the Universal ATF passed.
